What is The Merge?
The Merge is quite literally the merging of the current Ethereum Mainnet with the Beacon Chain.
What’s the purpose?
The main purpose of the Merge is for Ethereum to improve sustainability, scalability, and security by switching from the proof-of-work (PoW) to the proof-of-stake (PoS) consensus mechanism.
What is the Beacon chain?
The Beacon Chain is a PoS blockchain that runs separately from the Ethereum Mainnet. After the merge, however, it will become the block-production engine of the entire Ethereum network.
Quick facts:
The entire transactional history of Ethereum will also be merged and no action is required from users
The Merge will reduce Ethereum’s energy consumption by over 99.9%
There is not going to be an ETH2 token
The Merge is expected between 10-20 September 2022.
