Presearch

Fellow Presearchers and Node Operators, we are excited to begin the transition to Mainnet with the soft launch phase of the decentralized node platform today.
We shifted production traffic to the Testnet nodes for a brief test (less than an hour) today as our first of many network tests to come over the next few weeks.
We want to thank you for your continued and unwavering support. This is a huge milestone for the project, as we gear up for one of the most anticipated events this year — Mainnet. The Mainnet soft launch is a huge technical milestone on the road to Mainnet and a massive step forward for the entire crypto space towards achieving mass adoption in having a decentralized product that anyone in the world can use today with no disruption in their daily habits.
Over the next few weeks, we will continue to direct more production traffic from the current centralized node environment over to the decentralized nodes operated by community members. These production traffic shifts will prove out end-to-end platform performance in preparation for the official Mainnet launch, where ultimately all search queries will be permanently routed to decentralized community-run nodes.
<h2 id="header-0">What to expect as a node operator</h2>
Node operators with good reliability scores will begin to see sporadic increases in the number of queries their nodes receive. At first these will be short durations of increased traffic, targeted at testing various components of the platform such as the new ‘smart node routing’ system that prioritizes traffic for higher reliability nodes and optimizes for the best end-user experience, while ensuring all nodes also have an opportunity to get some traffic.
This may lead to ‘spotty’ periods, where your node receives many more queries than usual, followed by days where traffic drops down again. Please do not fret over these fluctuations during the next few weeks, as this is normal and will be experienced by all nodes.
<h3 id="strong-rewards-and-reliability-score-updates-ahead-strong">Rewards and reliability score updates ahead</h3>
On the rewards front, there are multiple factors at play, as we are transitioning from an ‘equal traffic, uneven rewards’ model, in which all connected nodes receive roughly equal traffic but are rewarded at a different rate based upon their reliability scores, to a ‘queries-served’ model that will route more traffic to nodes with higher reliability scores, but will then provide equal rewards each period for all successful and rewardable searches.
With this shift to a queries-served model, a larger emphasis is also being placed on the quality of the search results coming back from each node. Nodes pull results from multiple data sources (search engines, apis, etc.), and up until now searches were sometimes deemed successful even if they couldn’t return results from all attempted data sources. This could occur, for example, due to a node being blocked by one or more of the data sources it tried to obtain results from, but this resulted in incomplete results being returned to end users on the Testnet. As we get closer to Mainnet, we will soon start marking these searches as failed, and it is possible that some node operators will begin to see a declining reliability scores should such failures persist. This can be the result of an IP being blocked, other activity associated with the node server, or possibly some other configuration issue. In this scenario, a node operator may wish to migrate to another server or hosting provider and test their performance there.
Overall, as production traffic is tested on community-run nodes, smart node routing is tweaked, and geographically-distributed gateways soon come into effect, we anticipate that individual node performance will stabilize, and that ultimately more searches will be received across the network and more rewards will be earned for the nodes performing well.
<h3 id="strong-smart-node-routing-strong">Smart node routing</h3>
One critical component that is enabling our Mainnet soft launch is the release of ‘smart node routing’. We’ll have a separate post describing smart node routing in more technical detail, but at a high level, it is a move from every node receiving equal traffic and unequal rewards (based on performance), to nodes receiving unequal traffic (based on performance) and equal rewards. Higher-reliability nodes are being prioritized to optimize for the best end-user experience, and lower-reliability nodes are at times being helped out by higher-reliability nodes when it is unclear if the lower-reliability nodes will be successful.
The end result of smart node routing is that rewards should remain consistent based upon performance, while the overall network performance can be optimized to deliver a more stable and end-user-optimized experience.
<h3 id="strong-coming-soon-geographical-distribution-of-gateways-strong">Coming Soon: Geographical distribution of gateways</h3>
One of the last infrastructure components still outstanding before Mainnet launch is Geographically-distributed gateways. Currently, all nodes and web servers connect to gateways located in North America, which means nodes located in other locations around the world currently get penalized for having higher latency, and end users outside of North America also have a slower search experience. In a few weeks, Presearch will be releasing additional gateways and corresponding webservers in multiple regions across the world, optimizing latency both for nodes and for end-users globally.
As a node operator, your node will be automatically assigned to a region based on a combination of latency and global traffic and capacity needs, with the ability to override the default region assignment if desired.
We anticipate that it will take some time for traffic and rewards to settle in, and that the next few weeks will provide significant volatility as we test and rollout these final critical network optimizations, but know that the ultimate results will be worth it for the Presearch network. Exciting times ahead!
<h3 id="strong-a-huge-thank-you-to-the-node-operator-community-strong">A huge thank you to the node operator community!</h3>
We are grateful to all Presearch node operators for their patience and support throughout the Testnet phase of the project! You have played an integral role in the development of this platform and we appreciate your efforts! Thank you!
<h2 id="header-1">What to expect as a searcher</h2>
While we are transitioning to the decentralized community-run nodes, it’s possible that you may experience some hiccups, such as no results found, partial results, or slow loading times on occasion.
Please remember that this is temporary and will be resolved shortly. If you are experiencing issues, please report them via Telegram or <a href="https://discord.gg/RgKZFURkmN" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Discord</a> and we’ll ensure that we get your issues sorted out ASAP.
Thank you for your patience and continued support as we complete this transition!
<h2 id="header-2">Status reports and progress</h2>
Please keep an eye on the Presearch social channels for updates on any major changes underway. As we get closer to having all of the performance issues with the platform resolved, we’ll lock in an exact date for the public Mainnet launch.
