What Is Market Capitalization/Market Cap/MCAP?

Market capitalization in crypto is the total market value of a cryptocurrency. It is calculated by multiplying the total supply of coins or tokens by the current market price of each individual coin or token. 

Market capitalization is a key metric used to measure a cryptocurrency's size and value and is used by investors to gauge the attractiveness of a particular coin or token. It is also a useful tool for comparing different cryptocurrencies and determining which ones are the most valuable.

Why Is Market Capitalization Important in Crypto?

Market capitalization is important in crypto because it gives investors an indication of how much the entire market is worth. It is also used to measure the liquidity and overall value of a cryptocurrency. By tracking market capitalization, investors can ascertain whether or not a cryptocurrency is undervalued or overvalued, and determine whether or not investing in it is a wise decision. In addition, market capitalization is used to compare the relative sizes of different cryptocurrencies.

What Are Different Categories of Market Capitalization?

There are several categories of market caps in crypto:

  • Large-cap cryptocurrenciesThese are the largest and most established cryptocurrencies, typically with market capitalizations of $10 billion or more. Examples include Bitcoin and Ethereum.
  • Mid-cap cryptocurrencies: Mid-cap cryptocurrencies are those with market capitalizations between $1 billion and $10 billion. 
  • Small-cap cryptocurrencies: these are the smallest and least established cryptocurrencies, with market capitalizations below $1 billion. 

  • Micro-cap cryptocurrencies: Micro-cap cryptocurrencies are those with market capitalizations of less than $100 million.
