In fact, this negative view on capitalism has even extended to cryptocurrency.As <a href="https://www.animocabrands.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Animoca Brands</a> chairman <a href="https://twitter.com/ysiu" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Yat Siu</a> has pointed out, however, this disdain for capitalism is not as prevalent in Asia, emphasizing that “<a href="https://decrypt.co/122504/crypto-capitalist-narrative-animoca-yat-siu" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">crypto can save the capitalist narrative</a>”.“‘People who are in crypto, even if they don’t think of it this way…have a belief in a kind of stakeholder capitalism, in a shared economy, in which we can share values,’ he said.“Siu is a vocal proponent of crypto’s potential to better the world. And he believes that it may in fact be crypto that saves capitalism’s Western perception problem in the coming years.“‘I think Web3 and crypto can save the capitalist narrative,’ he says. ‘They can reintroduce the value of democracy—which, frankly, a lot of people have started to lose faith in, moreso in the West—[back into capitalism].’”<a href="https://www.coindesk.com/web3/2023/03/21/yat-siu-says-pro-capitalist-asian-countries-are-more-ready-to-embrace-web3/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">In another article</a>, Siu emphasized how bullish Asia is over web3 as opposed to the West.“Siu explained that due to the harsh crypto winter that hit many U.S.-based companies last year, its impact on NFTs has steered many U.S. firms away from investing in Web3. However, enthusiasm to invest in blockchain is still alive in Asia.“‘The adoption, readiness and willingness actually sits in Asia. Like, you go and want to sell something to people in Japan or Korea or Southeast Asia, you&#39;ll find a much more ready market versus over here.’”As I’ve previously written, I believe that <a href="https://www.digitallifeasia.net/change-asia-change-the-world/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Asia is where the future is being built</a>. And I agree with Siu that this has a lot to do with Asia’s willingness to embrace capitalism and web3. I believe our experiences have made a lot of us Asians techno-optimists. We have seen technology and capitalism working hand in hand in the development of our countries and the dramatic economic growth of our region. Why, then, should we be disillusioned with technology and capitalism?While he isn’t Asian, one individual who shares the same positive views on capitalism is <a href="https://wiki.cryptopia.com/factions/industrial/peter-nolan/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Peter Nolan</a>, the leader of the <a href="https://wiki.cryptopia.com/factions/industrial/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Industrial Faction</a> in Cryptopia.The Industrial Faction, also known as the inheritors, is one of the four Factions in the blockchain-based metaverse game and <a href="https://coinmarketcap.com/community/articles/63d7726487181d5515e4e057/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">virtual city-state</a> Cryptopia, along with <a href="https://coinmarketcap.com/community/articles/64084b2a24b7f93706ee5a8d/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Traditional</a>, <a href="https://coinmarketcap.com/community/articles/642183182d80720f9caa3bba/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Eco</a>, and Tech.What is the vision of the Inheritors for Cryptopia? As laid out in the <a href="https://wiki.cryptopia.com/factions/industrial/industrial-faction-litepaper/#The-Greatest-Opportunity-of-All" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Industrial litepaper</a>, it is, in effect, to create a capitalist utopia.“Our goal as Inheritors is simplicity in itself: create a climate with as few barriers for business and investment as possible. Everyone has the choice of what resources to use to build their business, and everyone has the exact same chance to achieve their dreams. Cryptopia will be the perfect place to establish foundations for businesses that are too big or too ahead of their time for any country, with their limiting laws and customs.”The Industrial Faction believes that the decentralized financial system made possible by web3 is a true game changer. It will allow unbridled competition and innovation – unhampered by regulation, whether by governments or banks.Among the Faction leaders, Nolan is perhaps the most blunt, but this shouldn’t detract from the force of his argument. As he put it in the litepaper: “I knew from the start that these other factions missed the obvious: people came to Cryptopia for only one very important reason: to get rich. Money talks, the rest walk. And if we can&#39;t provide them that, if we can&#39;t create a nation where anyone and everyone gets a shot at the big bucks, we don&#39;t have anything.”After all, whatever may be our other motivations for embracing web3, one of the most compelling reasons is the prospect of gaining financial freedom and securing a better life for us and our loved ones. Web3 gives us the opportunity to create more wealth and offer better-paying jobs to more people.In the real world, we have seen the privatization of many sectors, including space exploration. The best known example, of course, is the billionaire Elon Musk, who has become a poster boy for capitalism and technological innovation.In fact, a name has been coined for his brand of supposed “extreme capitalism”: <a href="https://www.npr.org/2022/04/19/1093352683/elon-musk-twitter-scifi-technology-futurism-takeover" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Muskism</a>.“I think of Muskism as an extreme, extravagant form of capitalism, really extraterrestrial capitalism. I think [extreme capitalism] is a kind of unchecked capitalism that insists that the government really has no role in the regulation of economic activity, at the practical level. At the cultural level, it really is engaged with selling the public on the idea of futurism as a way to impose economic conditions that come from the very deep past.“I think of Muskism and its vision for colonizing Mars as dating from the age of imperialism when British imperialists were colonizing countries around the world and science fiction writers like H.G. Wells were indicting British imperialism by telling stories about space colonies and how wrong that would be to take other people&#39;s land and enslave the people there.”The Inheritors explicitly hearken back to this age of imperialism. As <a href="https://wiki.cryptopia.com/factions/industrial/the-inheritors/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">they have put it</a>: “Cryptopia and its business models are not only disruptive to the status quo of political influence on multinational corporations—Cryptopia will be the first supranational entity in existence since the time of the British and Dutch East Indies Companies.”Nolan is unapologetic about what the other Factions see as ruthlessness on the part of the Inheritors. But while it might be hard to like him as a person, it is hard to argue against the need for economic growth – whether of Cryptopia or the real world.Interestingly, a recent book makes the somewhat surprising claim that what’s needed to save the world is <a href="https://mitsloan.mit.edu/ideas-made-to-matter/technology-and-capitalism-a-hopeful-remedy-planet" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">more technology and capitalism</a>.“As I’ll show, capitalism continued and spread (just look around you), but tech progress changed. We invented the computer, the internet, and a suite of other digital technologies that let us dematerialize our consumption: over time they allowed us to consume more and more while taking less and less from the planet. This happened because digital technologies offered the cost savings that come from substituting bits for atoms, and the intense cost pressures of capitalism caused companies to accept this offer over and over. Think, for example, how many devices have been replaced by your smartphone.“In addition to capitalism and tech progress, two other forces have also been essential for allowing us to get more from less. These are public awareness of the harms we’re doing our planet (such as pollution and species loss) and responsive governments, which act on the desires of their people and put in place sound measures to counteract these harms. Both public awareness and responsive government were greatly accelerated by Earth Day and the environmental movement in the United States and around the world.”At the end of the day, the Industrial Faction offers a compelling vision for building the future and promoting economic growth.
