Ethereum Founder #VitalikButerin Maps $ETH’s Role in #AI Development

Vitalik Buterin published a revised vision on Monday for how $ETH can support artificial intelligence development without accelerating toward artificial general intelligence. The Ethereum co-founder emphasized building tools for privacy, decentralization, and governance rather than pursuing autonomous superintelligence.

The framework updates ideas Buterin first presented two years ago on #crypto and AI intersections. He noted the fields typically receive analysis from entirely separate philosophical perspectives, creating conceptual gaps in how technology development proceeds.

Choosing a positive direction for AGI matters more than embracing undifferentiated acceleration, Buterin wrote on X. His updated approach focuses on near-term practical applications where #Ethereum serves as infrastructure that enables human agency in an AI-saturated environment.

One component involves developing tools for trustless, private AI interactions. Buterin pointed to local large language models, cryptographic payment systems for AI services, and client-side verification methods that reduce dependence on centralized providers.

Ethereum could function as an economic coordination layer for AI activity through #on-chain mechanisms. These systems would allow AI agents to transact, post security deposits, and build reputation histories, supporting decentralized architectures instead of single-organization control.

Buterin revisited the cypherpunk principle of maximizing verification to minimize trust. Large language models could make this vision practical by performing tasks humans cannot execute at scale, including independent verification of smart contracts and transaction proposals.
