#WinklevossTwins Donate $1.16M in #ZEC to Shielded Labs
Shielded Labs received 3,221
$ZEC valued at approximately $1.16 million from Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss to fund independent Zcash development, the organization announced Tuesday. The donation will finance protocol initiatives, including the Network Sustainability Mechanism, Crosslink, and Dynamic Fees, aimed at enhancing security, scalability, and economic stability.
The development group operates outside Zcash's block reward and development fund systems, depending on donations for protocol-level research and engineering work. Zcash founder Zooko Wilcox participates in the organization's efforts. Tyler Winklevoss stated that ecosystem health depends on multiple independent groups contributing at the protocol level, describing Shielded Labs as a vital component.
Cameron Winklevoss explained that the brothers have supported Zcash for years based on their view that robust #privacy represents a fundamental characteristic of sound money. The contribution follows recent disruption within the Zcash ecosystem. Multiple developers departed the Electric Coin Company this month following board disagreements and launched a separate entity.
Electric Coin Company initiated Zcash in 2016 and has functioned as the lead protocol developer working alongside the Zcash Foundation and other teams. Cryptographers who left the organization unveiled a new Zcash #wallet simultaneously, illustrating both splintering and broadening of development activities around the network.
