#RWA Protocols Claim Fifth Spot in #DeFi Rankings
Real-world asset protocols overtook decentralized exchanges to become the fifth-largest decentralized finance category by total value locked. RWAs now hold $17 billion in #TVL, up from $12 billion in the fourth quarter of 2024, according to DefiLlama.
RWAs did not rank in the top 10 categories at the start of 2025. Tokenized Treasurys, private credit, and similar instruments shifted from experimental products to fundamental DeFi components over 12 months.
Vincent Liu, chief investment officer at Kronos Research, said balance-sheet incentives drive #RWA growth rather than speculation. Sustained higher rates make tokenized Treasurys and private credit appealing as on-chain yield assets, while clearer regulations reduce barriers for institutional participants.
RWAs excluding stablecoins reached $24 billion earlier in 2025, with private credit and tokenized Treasurys leading expansion.
$ETH serves as the primary public settlement layer for on-chain debt and fund vehicles.
