#Ethereum Reaches 60M Gas Limit Before #Fusaka Upgrade
$ETH's block gas limit has been raised from 45 million to 60 million following calls from decentralized finance users and builders for expanded capacity, according to data from Gas Limit Pics. The mainnet block gas limit reached 60 million, the highest level the network has seen in four years.
Toni Wahrstätter, a researcher at the Ethereum Foundation, announced the increase on X, calling it the culmination of a year-long community effort to increase base-layer capacity. Data tracker Gas Limit Pics showed that in November, over 513,000 validators signaled a 60 million gas limit, pushing the
$ETH network over the threshold needed for the protocol to begin moving the gas limit upward.
The adjustment was automatically applied on Nov. 25 after more than half of the validators signaled approval—the threshold required under Ethereum's current consensus rules. A higher gas limit allows
$ETH to fit more work into each block, including swaps, #token transfers and smart contract calls, which can ease congestion during busy periods.
Independent blockchain researcher Zhixiong Pan said the increase is possible due to three converging improvements. These include EIP-7623, which introduces protocol-level block-size safeguards, client optimizations across multiple implementations that enable higher gas throughput, and months of testnet results showing consistent, stable block propagation under heavier loads.
