California Assembly Passes Bill Enabling State #Crypto Payments
$BTC and other #cryptocurrencies could soon be accepted for California state payments, following Assembly approval.
Assembly Bill 1180 passed with a unanimous 68-0 vote and now advances to the Senate for consideration.
The legislation requires the Department of Financial Protection and Innovation to develop #crypto payment rules.
State agencies would accept digital currencies for fees and transactions under the Digital Financial Assets Law.
Democratic Assemblymember Avelino Valencia sponsored the bill as a pilot program running until January 2031. If signed by Governor Gavin Newsom, the bill would become effective July 1, 2026.
California would join Florida, Colorado, and Louisiana in accepting #crypto payments for government obligations.
The DFPI must submit a detailed report by January 2028 outlining all processed transactions and challenges.
A companion "
$BTC rights" bill, AB 1052, also advanced, establishing #cryptocurrency self-custody rights for residents.
Currently, 117 merchants across California accept
$BTC payments, according to BTC Maps data.
