Blind Signing Explained: The Risk Behind Wallet Bugs
Blind signing is approving a blockchain transaction without being able to read what it does on the signing device.
It can hide malicious transfers, permissions, or altered instructions. Clear signing shows readable details, but it cannot prove a smart contract is safe.
Wallet bugs and compromised interfaces turn blind-signing into a direct path to losses.
This explains the mechanism, a documented attack, and practical checks. Readers can follow crypto news for security updates.

What Is Blind Signing in Crypto?

A signing device shows only what it can decode. Simple transfers display an amount and a recipient.
Complex smart contract calls often appear as calldata, which is encoded. The smart contract instruction data few people can read. When the device cannot decode it, blind signing is the only way to proceed.
Three layers matter. The hardware wallet guards the private key. The wallet interface, usually a website or app, builds the transaction.
Hardware wallets protect keys well, but blind-signing lets a compromised interface decide what the key approves.

How a Compromised Interface Misleads Signers

The clearest documented case occurred in February, 2025, during a routine move of ETH between exchange wallets protected by multisig, which needs several approvals per transaction. A forensic investigation report describes the sequence:

February 4: a developer workstation at the wallet provider was compromised, likely through social engineering

February 19: JavaScript served to the signing interface was modified with malicious code

February 21: signers approved what looked like a normal transfer, but the payload had been replaced

Two minutes later: the malicious code was removed

The replaced payload delegated execution to a pre-deployed malicious contract. That let attackers sweep over 400,000 ETH without further multisig approval. An FBI public service announcement attributed the attack to the Lazarus Group.
Earlier incidents followed a similar pattern, with interfaces showing legitimate data while different transactions were signed.
This is why blind signing is a structural weakness, not only a user mistake. Careful review of a compromised screen is still blind signing, because the signer cannot verify the real data.

Transfers vs. Approvals

A transfer moves tokens once. A token allowance lets a contract spend tokens up to a set limit, and an unlimited allowance keeps that permission open.
NFT operator approvals differ: one approval can cover an entire collection. Revoking permission later does not reverse a theft that already happened.

On May 12, 2026, the Ethereum Foundation announced anopen clear signing standard built on ERC-7730, with a registry of readable transaction descriptions.
Independent reviews check accuracy, and wallets choose which sources to trust. The announcement names ending blind-signing as the goal, but a standard is not universal adoption. Clear signing also cannot judge whether a contract is safe.

What to Check Before Signing

Confirm the site and app are authentic

Details on the device screen, not only the browser

Check the recipient, amount, permissions, and allowance size

Stop if the device cannot explain a key action, since blind signing hides exactly that

Use a separate wallet for risky apps

Review token and NFT permissions regularly

Teams holding large funds should verify transaction data with independent software outside the signing interface.

What to Do After a Suspicious Signature

Stop signing and move remaining assets to a fresh wallet

Revoke the suspicious allowance with a trusted permission tool

Ignore unsolicited recovery offers, which are common scams

Report the incident to the relevant platform and authorities

Acting fast limits further loss, but a confirmed on-chain transfer generally cannot be reversed. After any blind-signing mistake, treat the old wallet as unsafe.

Market Data to Check Before Approving

Before approving a new token or protocol, readers can verify basics:

Live token prices and volume

Exchange security education

Market capitalization rankings

Status labels: market data is live. The clear signing standard is live, wallet adoption is in development, and universal support is planned but not dated.
Token checks do not remove blind signing risk, but they help spot fake listings. SeeEthereum news for context.

Security and Risk Considerations

Clear signing coverage is incomplete, so blind signing still occurs

Hardware wallets protect keys, not the accuracy of displayed data

Phishing often follows major incidents, as an exchange phishing alert shows

Confirmed on-chain transactions generally cannot be reversed

No single tool removes blind signing risk.

Conclusion

Blind signing is a trust gap between what an interface shows and what a transaction does.
A documented attack showed how wide that gap can grow. Clear signing narrows it, and careful review narrows it further.
Until the standard is widespread, blind-signing deserves caution every time. Any prompt that cannot be read in full counts as blind signing. Terms such as calldata and multisig are explained in the crypto dictionary.
