Bitcoin edged back toward $77,300 on Friday after Thursday’s slide, rising 0.7% since midnight UTC but remaining 0.87% lower over 24 hours and 6% below last week’s $82,284 high. The recovery looks more like stabilization than a decisive reversal, with most of the market still carrying losses from the prior session. Ether gained 1.6% on Friday and Solana added just under 1%, while 68 of 100 tracked crypto assets moved higher on the day. The broader index advanced 0.5%, yet remained 1.6% lower over 24 hours. That sharply reversed Thursday’s heavily negative market breadth overall.
The rebound arrived as traditional markets also firmed. S&P 500 futures rose 0.48%, Nasdaq futures gained 0.56%, gold climbed 0.74% and silver advanced 0.92%, while the Dollar Index stayed unchanged. Bitcoin’s next test now sits alongside key U.S. inflation data, with August consumer prices due before the Federal Reserve’s September 15-16 policy meeting. Memecoins led Friday’s crypto recovery with a 0.73% gain since midnight UTC, reversing Thursday’s pattern when speculative assets suffered the sharpest losses. Still, 80 of the 100 tracked assets remained down over the full 24-hour period. The dollar offered no offsetting move.

Crypto futures positioning shows that leverage is being reduced rather than rebuilt aggressively. Aggregate open interest fell to $59.5 billion from $62.4 billion on Wednesday, while 24-hour trading volume reached $94.2 billion and liquidations climbed to $256.3 million. The clearest unwind occurred in Zcash, where leverage contracted sharply as price fell. ZEC open interest dropped 20.1% to $1.4 billion, its price declined 9% to $1,112.10, and $17.2 million was liquidated. Funding turned negative at -0.0016%, making Zcash the only major token with a negative rate among the assets highlighted. Liquidations nearly doubled from midweek levels.
Bitcoin’s own derivatives picture was steadier. Open interest remained near $25 billion, up only 0.12% over 24 hours and accounting for 42.1% of total futures positioning. Bitcoin generated $60.3 million in liquidations, while Ether contributed $46.5 million, together representing more than 40% of the total. The market is attempting to stabilize without a major return of leverage, as Bitcoin funding stayed positive but subdued and the long-short account ratio remained close to balanced. With inflation data imminent, the recovery toward $77,300 leaves traders watching whether support can hold before macroeconomic volatility returns. Positioning remained balanced.
