<p>The Solana Foundation has partnered with data platform Trycarbonara to<a href="https://twitter.com/solana/status/1649414091742511105" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank"> launch</a> a real-time tracking dashboard to measure carbon emissions on the platform&#8217;s blockchain, making it the first major smart-contract blockchain to do so. </p>



<p>The dashboard on the Solana Climate website displays various indicators such as total node count, megawatt-hours, total carbon emissions average, and marginal use. It also includes emissions comparison charts that show how Solana <a href="https://www.cryptopolitan.com/blockchain-solutions-security-privacy/?swcfpc=1">blockchain</a> usage compares to other emission-producing activities, such as burning a gallon of gasoline or performing a Google search.</p>

<p>The data used for the dashboard is open-source and is modeled on the estimated carbon footprint of the Dell PowerEdge R940. The <a href="https://solana.com/news/announcing-real-time-emissions-measurement-on-the-solana-blockchain" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Solana</a> Foundation&#8217;s move towards carbon emission transparency aligns with global efforts to utilize blockchain technology for monitoring carbon emissions.</p>

<p>The European Commission has recognized the potential of blockchain, particularly through smart contracts, to accurately measure and track carbon emissions across value chains as part of its &#8220;Shaping Europe&#8217;s digital future&#8221; initiative. President Joe Biden has proposed budget plans in the United States that would impose a 30% excise on electricity used for cryptocurrency mining.</p>



<h2 id="solana-foundation-8217-s-initiative">Solana Foundation&#8217;s initiative</h2>



<p>The Foundation&#8217;s initiative could potentially pave the way for other blockchain platforms to adopt similar tracking systems to measure and disclose their <a href="https://www.cryptopolitan.com/blockchain-technology-carbon-credit-markets/?swcfpc=1">carbon</a> emissions. As the world increasingly focuses on environmental sustainability and combating climate change, transparency and accountability in carbon emissions reporting are becoming critical factors for businesses and industries, including the blockchain ecosystem. </p>



<p>The real-time tracking dashboard by the Company&#8217;s Foundation is a step towards promoting greater awareness and action on carbon emissions in the blockchain industry.</p>
