What Happened In Crypto Market Today: Why Bitcoin Sinks Below $85K
Red candles are everywhere today. If you're asking what happened in crypto market today, the short answer is a fast, broad sell off. Bitcoin, ether and nearly every major altcoin fell within hours, bond yields jumped to their highest point since 2007, and a fresh hack added to the nerves. Here's the full picture, straight from CoinGecko and the other sources that reported it first.
Key Takeaways

The crypto cap dropped from $3.02 trillion to $2.92 trillion in a day, a 3.4% fall that shows how fast fear spread.

Bitcoin fell 3% to $83,119.59, back below $85K, while XRP crashed hardest at 8.6%, down to $1.46.

Bitcoin and ether ETFs still logged fresh inflows today, even as spot prices fell.

Why Is Crypto Market Down Today?

CoinGecko data puts the global crypto cap at $2.92 trillion right now, down 3.4% in the last 24 hours. A day earlier, that figure sat near $3.02 trillion. A one day move that large is rare, and it shows the sell off hit fast and hit everywhere at once.
Trading volume backs this up. Traders moved $117 billion in the last 24 hours, well above a calm day. Bitcoin still holds 57.3% of the total crypto pie, and Ethereum holds 11%. When bitcoin's share stays steady during a crash like this, altcoins usually took the bigger hit, and today they did.

So why is bitcoin down today, and how bad did it get for the rest? Here's the bitcoin price today alongside the biggest altcoins, all figures from CoinGecko.

Crypto ETF Flows Stay Green Despite The Sell Off

Here's the odd part of today's crypto news. While spot prices fell, ETF money kept coming in. SoSoValue data shows bitcoin ETFs logged a fifth straight day of inflows, taking in $346.98 million on September 23 and pushing the running total to $57.22 billion.

Ethereum ETFs made it four days straight too, adding $104.63 million for a total of $13.79 billion. XRP ETFs posted their second highest daily inflow of the month at $18.04 million, with $1.75 billion banked so far. Solana ETFs stretched their own streak to four days, adding $13.77 million for a running total of $1.49 billion.
When ETF buyers keep showing up during a price drop, it often points to longer term holders buying in rather than panic selling.

Why Is Crypto Down Today? Bond Yields Tell The Real Story

The real trigger sits outside crypto. Per the Kobeissi Letter, the 10 year Treasury yield just posted its biggest single day gain in 17 months, up 15 basis points. The last jump this large came in April 2025, on what traders called Liberation Day. This time, nothing dramatic happened in the news, it was "just another day in the 2026 bond market."
Bloomberg reported that stronger than expected economic data, rising oil prices and weak demand at a $70 billion five year note auction drove the sell off deeper. The five year yield crossed 5% for the first time since 2007. The 10 year yield climbed nearly 17 basis points to 5.13%, and the 30 year hit near 5.4%, both close to their highest levels since 2007.
The auction cleared at 5.033%, over 3 basis points above what traders expected and the second weakest result since 2018. Rate swaps now fully price in three more 25 basis point Fed hikes over the next year, and the S&P 500 fell 0.8% on the day.

Fed Rate Hike Bets Add To The Pressure

Traders are now pricing in real odds of another Fed rate hike, and that explains a big part of why is crypto crashing today. Per the CME FedWatch tool, the next Fed meeting lands on October 28, 2026, just 34 days out.
The Fed funds rate sits between 3.75% and 4.00%, and FedWatch data puts the odds of a 25 basis point hike at that meeting at 75.3%. Just nine months ago, most traders expected a third rate cut by now. That gap between expectation and reality is fueling the pressure.

$1.83 Million Hack Adds To The Jitters

PeckShieldAlert reported that Payy's Rollup contract may have been drained of roughly $1.83 million in USDC. The attacker swapped the funds for 683.38 ETH and split it across three wallet addresses. Payy hasn't commented yet. Small hacks like this tend to shake confidence further during an already jumpy session.

Good News Amid The Chaos

Not everything in crypto market today is bad. The Digital Asset Market Clarity Act failed to advance in the Senate last week, but Patrick Witt, the White House's top crypto adviser, isn't backing off. Speaking at Georgetown University, he said plainly, "The future for digital assets is bright." He admitted the administration was disappointed by the setback but said officials plan to keep pushing clarity through policy either way.
Binance confirmed it will list Hyperliquid (HYPE) on September 24 at 19:00 UTC+8, opening HYPE/USDT, HYPE/USDC and HYPE/TRY spot pairs, with deposits opening an hour later and withdrawals expected on September 25. HYPE carries Binance's Seed Tag, and its cap sits near $21 billion today.
Separately, Galaxy Digital bought $100 million of Sky Protocol's sUSDS stablecoin with its own balance sheet, per a Wu Blockchain report, and approved it as collateral across a trading business with a $1.4 billion average loan book serving over 1,600 counterparties. Galaxy also picked up an undisclosed amount of SKY, and both firms are discussing expanding an existing $500 million warehouse facility.

What's Next For Crypto Market?

Two dates matter next.

On September 25, Plasma unlocks close to 18.94% of its released supply, a large jump in circulating XPL that could add real sell pressure and force a price reset.

On September 28, Solana's Alpenglow testnet migration activates, swapping TowerBFT for Votor using the exact process mainnet will later run, a step toward Solana's roughly 150 millisecond finality goal, though mainnet beta is still pending.

Conclusion

That's what happened in crypto market today, in short. Bond stress, not a crypto failure, sent bitcoin, ether and XRP lower, yet ETF buyers kept showing up, the White House kept pushing for rules, and Binance added a new listing. Watch the Fed's October 28 meeting and the September 25 Plasma unlock next.
