The Independent National Electoral Commission’s official website, inecnigeria.org, is now running on different underlying infrastructure than it was earlier this week, following a public row over gambling content found on the domain. INEC has not issued any statement confirming or explaining the change.
A review of the live site on 29 August shows that inecnigeria.org is now built on Nuxt.js, a modern JavaScript-based framework, replacing what researchers had previously identified as a WordPress backend. The homepage now loads cleanly, without the broken links or “Uncategorised” placeholder pages that had appeared in some sections earlier in the week. No gambling-related content is visible anywhere on the domain, and the subpages that once carried casino articles now return standard content or error pages.
The change follows a discovery by data researcher <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/uwakwemartin" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Martin Uwakwe</a>, who posts as @mundus01 on X, that around 28 casino and gambling pages had been published directly on INEC’s official domain, alongside a separate subdomain issue in which voters.inecnigeria.org was found serving unrelated content behind a security certificate that did not match the commission’s domain.&nbsp;
Technext has already done a <a href="https://technext24.com/news/inec-website-casino-pages-2027-elections/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">detailed report </a>on that discovery, the account linked to the pages, and its wider implications for INEC’s digital security ahead of the 2027 general election.
For an agency entrusted with the democratic will of over 200 million people, treating a massive domain takeover as a routine content management update is not just poor communication; it is a profound failure of public accountability.

Swapping out a web framework takes mere hours. Eradicating systemic administrative rot requires actual institutional transparency.
<h3 id="inecs-continuous-silence" class="wp-block-heading">INEC’s continuous silence&nbsp;</h3>
What has followed the initial exposure is a pattern of silence from the commission. Premium Times, FIJ and Chronicle NG each say they contacted INEC spokesperson Mohammed Haruna by phone and WhatsApp this week, seeking clarification on the gambling pages, who held publishing access to the commission’s content management system, and whether an internal audit was planned or underway. None of the three outlets reported receiving a response by the time of their respective publications. Technext sent similar enquiries to Haruna’s known contact channels for this report; as of publication, there has been no reply.
INEC has likewise made no public statement addressing the change to its website’s underlying infrastructure. There has been no press release, no post on the commission’s official social media accounts, and no reference to the incident on the rebuilt site itself.&nbsp;
It is therefore not possible to independently confirm whether the shift represents a deliberate security response prompted by the casino-content discovery, a coincidentally timed scheduled update, or some combination of the two. Government agencies periodically refresh or migrate their web platforms for routine technical reasons unconnected to any single incident, and without a statement from INEC, the timing alone cannot be treated as proof of cause and effect.
This recurring pattern of opacity hits at a particularly fragile moment. With the 2027 general elections drawing closer, public trust in Nigeria’s civic tech stack remains on life support. The technical debacles surrounding previous election cycles proved that software is only as trustworthy as the engineers and bureaucrats who manage access to it.&nbsp;
When an agency cannot even secure its basic content management system against spam bots and rogue link-builders, convincing a sceptical electorate that its central collation databases and transmission channels are impenetrable becomes an impossible sell.

For now, Uwakwe’s original findings raise practical questions that remain unanswered. It is not publicly known who had publishing access to INEC’s website before the apparent rebuild, whether that access has been revoked or whether the commission has commissioned an independent audit of its digital infrastructure. Civil society voices, including Uwakwe himself, have called for exactly such an audit in the days since the discovery.
The silent overhaul of INEC’s website is a superficial answer to a structural crisis. Replacing a compromised interface solves the headline problem for a news cycle, but it does nothing to restore the credibility shattered by the intrusion. Until the electoral umpire subjects its digital assets to independent, transparent auditing, no amount of cosmetic code will wash away the suspicion that its systems remain fatally insecure.
