Ripple said on Wednesday it will acquire Canadian payments startup Rail in a $200 million deal as it seeks to speed up cross-border settlements and expand the reach of its RLUSD stablecoin. 
The acquisition is expected to close in the fourth quarter, pending regulatory clearance, Ripple said in a statement. 
The move comes on the heels of growing momentum in the stablecoin space, following the recent passage of the <a href="https://financefeeds.com/genius-act-explained-u-s-stablecoin-law-rules-and-compliance-guide/">GENIUS Act</a> — the United States’ first federal legislation providing a framework for dollar-backed digital tokens. Ripple is among a wave of crypto firms racing to align with the new rules. 
Rail, based in Toronto and backed by Galaxy Ventures and Accomplice, specializes in tokenized dollar transfers and expects to process roughly 10% of the $36 billion global B2B stablecoin payment volume this year. Its platform promises to compress cross-border settlement times from days to hours — a key attraction for financial institutions and fintech firms alike. 
“The acquisition of Rail is a strategic step in Ripple’s effort to bring RLUSD to more enterprise customers, especially as regulation around stablecoins matures both in the U.S. and internationally,” said Ripple President Monica Long. 
The deal also gives Ripple a stronger regulated foothold in North America and emerging markets, where demand for faster, compliant settlement options is on the rise. 
It’s Ripple’s second major purchase in recent months. In April, the company acquired prime brokerage <a href="https://financefeeds.com/ripple-backed-hidden-road-rolls-out-otc-options/">Hidden Road</a> for $1.25 billion, broadening its liquidity and custody capabilities for RLUSD. Since its December 2024 launch, RLUSD has reached a circulating supply of over $500 million — still small compared to leaders Tether’s USDT and Circle’s USDC. 
Ripple has also added <a href="https://financefeeds.com/ripple-picks-bny-mellon-to-safeguard-rlusd-reserves-as-cap-hits-500m/">BNY</a> as a reserve custodian and applied for a U.S. banking license last month — clear signals of its intent to operate within the bounds of the new regulatory era.
