United States decentralized microblogging social platform Bluesky has seen its users surge in Brazil following the country’s ban on Elon Musk’s social media platform X.
In a Sept. 1 X post, Bluesky Social, also known as Bsky — which looks and feels very similar to <a data-ct-non-breakable="null" href="https://cointelegraph.com/learn/what-is-elon-musks-x-the-everything-app" rel="" target="_self" text="null">Musk’s rival platform</a> — <a data-ct-non-breakable="null" href="https://x.com/bluesky/status/1829994345132667357" rel="null" target="null" text="null">said</a> it had gained one million new users in the past three days.&nbsp;
On Aug. 30, a Brazilian Supreme Court justice <a data-ct-non-breakable="null" href="https://cointelegraph.com/news/brazil-supreme-court-bans-twitter-elon-musk" rel="" target="_self" text="null">ordered the suspension of X</a> in the country after Musk refused to name a legal representative for the firm.

Just a day after X was expelled, a Bluesky developer <a data-ct-non-breakable="null" href="https://bsky.app/profile/jaz.bsky.social/post/3l2zpatdkjx2f" rel="null" target="null" text="null">reported</a> a surge in daily app traffic as new users rushed to register.&nbsp;

Bluesky is a decentralized social media platform and public benefit corporation owned by Jay Graber, based in the US.&nbsp;
It was <a data-ct-non-breakable="null" href="https://x.com/jack/status/1204766078468911106" rel="null" target="null" text="null">announced</a> in 2019 by <a data-ct-non-breakable="null" href="https://cointelegraph.com/learn/jack-dorsey" rel="null" target="null" text="null">Jack Dorsey</a> and launched to the public in February 2024. It <a data-ct-non-breakable="null" href="https://bsky.social/about/faq" rel="null" target="null" text="null">reported</a> a user base of more than 7.6 million in September.
Meanwhile, Elon Musk’s X has been <a data-ct-non-breakable="null" href="https://cointelegraph.com/news/brazil-supreme-court-threatens-suspend-x" rel="" target="_self" text="null">engaged in an escalating legal fight</a> with Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes.

The social media company refused to ban certain accounts as part of a broader crackdown on what Moraes claimed was election disinformation.
On Sept. 2, a panel of five Supreme Court justices <a data-ct-non-breakable="null" href="https://cointelegraph.com/news/brazil-supreme-court-judge-suspend-elon-musk" rel="" target="_self" text="null">upheld Moraes’ Aug. 30 ruling</a> suspending the platform in the South American nation.
The crypto community <a data-ct-non-breakable="null" href="https://cointelegraph.com/news/crypto-community-reacts-brazil-suspension-social-media-x-elon-musk" rel="" target="_self" text="null">reacted strongly to the censorship of X</a> in Brazil, with some suggesting that other countries may follow suit.&nbsp;
