Russia is set to launch trials for cryptocurrency exchanges and digital token payments on September 1, aimed at mitigating the effects of international sanctions. The trials, reported by Bloomberg, will involve the National Payment Card System, which will facilitate conversions between rubles and cryptocurrencies. This system, managed by the central bank since 2014, already oversees domestic interbank payments and Mir cards, making it an ideal platform for testing crypto transactions, according to <a href="https://news.bitcoin.com/russia-set-to-launch-crypto-payment-trials-next-week/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Bitcoin.com</a>.
The Russian parliament recently passed legislation to legalize crypto mining and regulate digital tokens for cross-border payments. These measures were signed into law by President Vladimir Putin on August 8, reflecting the government's intent to explore cryptocurrency as a solution to the growing difficulties faced by Russian businesses in conducting international transactions.
Finance Minister Anton Siluanov stated that authorities are considering ways to legalize cryptocurrency exchanges, though a
final decision has yet to be made. If successful, these trials could pave the way for the Moscow and St. Petersburg currency exchanges to establish crypto trading platforms next year. This initiative comes as Russia seeks alternatives to navigate the financial challenges imposed by sanctions.
