The truth was that the person he spoke to on the phone was not a Coinbase employee but a professional scammer. In this short time, the scammer managed to get Fred to provide his Coinbase password and online banking information. He only realized the severity of the situation after receiving a call from Wells Fargo about suspicious activities and then cut the connection.</p>
