<p>Robinhood, the popular trading app, is making a major push into the cryptocurrency space with its recent $200 million acquisition of Bitstamp, one of the oldest and largest crypto exchanges. The deal gives Robinhood an immediate global footprint, with Bitstamp having strong presences in Europe and Asia, over 50 active regulatory licenses worldwide, and offerings like staking and lending.</p>
<p>The acquisition accelerates Robinhood's plans for international crypto expansion beyond just the U.S. market. Company CEO Vlad Tenev stated Robinhood has long wanted to launch its own crypto exchange to "improve upon" the existing models. The deal also allows Robinhood to start serving institutional crypto customers like market makers.</p>
<p>Robinhood is clearly going all-in on crypto as traditional finance continues embracing digital assets as a new asset class. Analysts estimate ether could hit $22,000 by 2030 as the crypto economy and Web3 flourish. With inflows into bitcoin ETFs surging, the "wall of money" narrative driving crypto higher appears to be playing out.</p>

<p>Cryptocurrencies are emerging as a powerful political force as well, with advocacy group Stance reaching 1 million supporters. Nearly 20 million pro-crypto voters could swing future U.S. elections according to some projections. Central banks are also acting, with the ECB delivering the first rate cut of 2024.</p>
<p>The Robinhood-Bitstamp merger positions the companies at the center of converging trends in finance, technology and politics. Meanwhile, Vlad Tenev acknowledged the complex U.S. regulatory environment, stating certain crypto products like staking may initially only be offered internationally.</p>
<p>Despite past controversies, Robinhood is betting big that catering to the rapidly growing crypto economy can make it a dominant player. By combining an established exchange with its millions of retail users, Robinhood is positioning itself as the gateway to the coming Web3 world.</p>
