<p>AI Chatbot New York City’s effort to use AI in government operations is running into a blunder, as the city has reportedly realized that its AI-based chatbot is providing businesses with wrong and, in some cases, potentially unlawful advice. <p>In yet another investigation, The Markup discovered that the online chatbot usually offered incomplete or flatly wrong information on critical subjects such as housing discrimination and the rights of tenants. The question is asked, “Should a landlord accept a tenant who has Section 8 or rental assistance?” For this example, it gives a wrong answer in the negative. This is contrary to the New York City law, which prohibits the landlord from discriminating against tenants by sources of income, with only a few exceptions.</p>
<p>Experts and advocates have raised alarm over the potential consequences of the chatbot’s misinformation. A local housing policy expert described the errors as “dangerously inaccurate” with life-impacting implications for both landlords and tenants. By following the bot guidance, landlords would fall into practices that would violate both anti-discrimination laws and tenant rights, thereby worsening the problem of housing inequalities and economic injustices for the city.</p>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="calls-for-remedial-action">Calls for remedial action</h2>
<p>The revelations have raised calls for the city to look into the deficiencies of its AI chatbot and ensure it is actually rendering users accurate and legally sound information. Advocates of this view underscore that bad advice has to be redressed, ensuring safeguards are there so that in life, such kinds of mishaps don’t occur. As New York City continues to translate its advances in technology to governance, accountability with the highest caliber and accuracy must dominate, maintaining the public trust for businesses and residents equally.</p>
