BlackRock, the U.S.-based asset management giant, is considering the acquisition of spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) for its Global Allocation Fund, as indicated in a recent filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
The firm outlined its potential investment strategy in the <a href="https://www.sec.gov/ixviewer/ix.html?doc=/Archives/edgar/data/0000834237/000119312524062281/d806037d497.htm" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" target="_blank">filing</a>, stating:

 “The Fund may acquire shares in exchange-traded products (ETPs) that seek to reflect generally the performance of the price of bitcoin by directly holding bitcoin, including shares of a Bitcoin ETP sponsored by an affiliate of BlackRock.”

This strategic consideration by BlackRock aims to leverage bitcoin ETFs listed on national securities exchanges to enhance the investment diversity of the Global Allocation Fund. The fund, known for its mix of U.S. and international equity, debt, and money market securities aimed at maximizing returns, managed assets totaling $17.8 billion as of March 7.
In a parallel development, BlackRock filed earlier this week to include spot bitcoin ETFs in its Strategic Income Opportunities fund, boasting over $36.7 billion in assets. This move underlines the asset manager’s growing interest in incorporating cryptocurrency-based investment products into its diverse portfolio offerings.
Notably, BlackRock’s foray into the cryptocurrency ETF market has already made significant strides with the iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT). Since its launch in January, IBIT has quickly ascended to prominence in the ETF landscape, achieving record daily inflows of $788.3 million following <a href="https://crypto.ro/en/cryptocurrencies/bitcoin/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">bitcoin’s</a> surge to a new all-time high above $69,000. Currently, IBIT holds $12.7 billion worth of bitcoin, showcasing the trust’s substantial impact on the market.

The success of IBIT has also spurred BlackRock to propose the introduction of a spot Ethereum ETF. However, this proposal, along with a similar one from Fidelity, awaits a decision from the SEC, reflecting the regulatory hurdles still faced by cryptocurrency ETFs.
As BlackRock continues to explore the potential of spot bitcoin ETFs for its funds, the asset manager’s actions signal a significant shift towards integrating digital assets into traditional investment portfolios. This development marks a pivotal moment for the cryptocurrency market, emphasizing the increasing acceptance and institutional interest in digital currencies.
