Announced by Oleg Ogienko, BitRiver's director for interaction with state authorities, during a press conference in <a href="https://ultramining.com/news/en/irkutsk-region-busts-1-000-illegal-crypto-miners-in-a-year-fires-a-major-concern/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Irkutsk</a>, this facility is set to become the largest data center in the Far Eastern Federal District, marking a significant milestone in the region's technological advancement, according to <a href="https://www.interfax-russia.ru/siberia/news/bitriver-vo-ii-kvartale-zapustit-data-centr-v-buryatii-na-100-mvt" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Interfax-russia</a>.
In a strategic expansion, BitRiver aims to deploy <a href="https://ultramining.com/news/en/crypto-miners-shift-gears-ai-is-the-new-gold-rush/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">data centers</a> with a total consumed capacity of 1,500 MW across the Russian Federation within the next two years. A notable aspect of this initiative is the planned location of these facilities near oil and gas fields to leverage associated petroleum gas (APG) as an energy source. This approach not only promises to power the data centers sustainably but also addresses the environmental concern of APG flaring by utilizing it efficiently.
Currently, BitRiver operates facilities with approximately 40 MW of capacity that predominantly use APG-based energy, located in regions rich in oil and gas resources like the Khanty-Mansi and Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrugs, as well as the Orenburg region. The company is exploring further opportunities in Eastern <a href="https://ultramining.com/news/en/russia-s-energy-ministry-charges-forward-to-legalize-crypto-mining/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Siberia</a>, indicating a willingness to expand its footprint in collaboration with subsoil users expressing interest.
An intriguing prospect for BitRiver's data centers is their potential use for advancing artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. Ogienko mentioned that considerations are underway to accommodate AI capacities within these facilities, hinting at a broader applicability beyond traditional data storage and processing roles.
With an operational bandwidth of over 526 MW across 15 data centers and <a href="https://ultramining.com/news/en/bitcoin-mining-reshaping-landscape-amid-global-interest-surge/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">hosting</a> more than 175,000 computing units, BitRiver's collaboration with major partners like Gazprom Neft for APG projects and En+ Group through the joint venture Bit+ exemplifies its commitment to innovative and environmentally conscious digital solutions. This expansion in Buryatia not only reinforces BitRiver's position in the digital economy but also reflects the growing integration of sustainable practices in the tech industry's infrastructure projects.
