<p>In a groundbreaking collaboration aimed at advancing urban intelligence, China and Pakistan have embarked on the China-Pak SmartCities Initiative. Through the establishment of the CPInS Lab at Pakistan National University of Science and Technology (NUST), the two nations are spearheading efforts to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) technology into the fabric of Pakistan’s cities. This initiative holds promise not only for enhancing urban governance but also for fostering talent exchange and positioning Pakistan as a hub for AI development in South Asia.</p>
<p>In the midst of joint efforts to construct the Belt and Road Initiative and the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), Chinese and Pakistani researchers are actively contributing to the development of smarter and safer cities in Pakistan through the application of artificial intelligence (AI) technology.</p>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="establishment-of-cpins-lab">Establishment of CPInS Lab</h2>
<p>Under the banner of the China-Pak SmartCities Initiative, the CPInS Lab was officially inaugurated at Pakistan National University of Science and Technology (NUST) at the onset of 2022. This landmark collaboration between NUST and the Guangzhou Institute of Software Application Technology marks a significant step towards leveraging AI technology for urban development in Pakistan. The lab serves as a nucleus for various research endeavors aimed at enhancing urban infrastructure and governance through the innovative application of AI technology.</p>
<p>In a recent report by Gwadar Pro, Dr. Wu Jun, Director of the CPInS Lab, highlighted significant progress in research areas such as UAV control systems and AI-based recognition localization. Dr. Wu emphasized the lab’s commitment to applying these research findings to smart city projects in Pakistan, thereby addressing local challenges and enhancing urban governance capabilities. Also, the collaboration facilitates the seamless integration of core technologies like smart street lights and surveillance systems tailored to local conditions.</p>

<p>Seemab Latif, Head of the Pakistani arm of the lab and Associate Professor at NUST’s School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (SEECS), underscored the transformative potential of sci-tech cooperation between China and Pakistan. Latif emphasized China’s global leadership in the AI industry and Pakistan’s untapped scientific potential, suggesting that bilateral cooperation could propel Pakistan towards becoming an AI development center in South Asia.</p>
<p>The CPInS Lab’s initiatives extend beyond theoretical research, with tangible projects already underway. These projects include the development of efficient traffic management systems and infrastructure monitoring solutions using technology imported from China. Pilot projects involving license plate recognition systems and intelligent security measures are currently being implemented, promising enhanced safety and convenience for Pakistani residents.</p>

<p>Beyond technology transfer, the CPInS Lab prioritizes talent exchange and training as integral components of the initiative. The lab has already recruited four Pakistani postdoctoral fellows to work in Guangzhou, fostering cross-cultural collaboration and knowledge exchange. Also, plans are underway to recruit more students in the coming years, ensuring a continuous flow of talent between China and Pakistan.</p>
<p>Lab researcher Sahar Ershad highlighted the diverse array of projects undertaken in collaboration with Chinese counterparts, ranging from activity detection to waste management. This collaborative approach not only enriches research endeavors but also nurtures a pool of skilled professionals equipped to tackle contemporary urban challenges.</p>
