<p>The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has taken decisive action to combat the misuse of artificial intelligence (AI) in voice calls, making it illegal to utilize AI-generated voices for robocalls in the United States. Spurred by concerns over the proliferation of deceptive practices, this regulatory move marks a significant step towards safeguarding consumers from fraudulent communications.</p>

<p>Under the auspices of the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA), the FCC unanimously passed a Declaratory Ruling on February 8, categorizing AI-generated voice calls as ‘artificial’ and therefore subject to the same regulatory framework as traditional robocalls. This ruling empowers state attorneys general to prosecute offenders who employ AI-generated voices for nefarious purposes, reinforcing the existing measures aimed at curbing unsolicited and deceptive telemarketing practices.</p>
