In an unprecedented move, the United States Department of Justice has charged two senior staff members from New Jersey’s Patterson Joint Unified School District with running an illicit crypto mining operation. This operation, cleverly hidden within the confines of the school district's infrastructure, has stirred up significant controversy, underscoring the lengths to which individuals will go to mine cryptocurrency illegally. The accused, former Assistant Superintendent Jeffrey Menge and IT Director Eric Drabert, allegedly orchestrated an elaborate scheme between 2018 and 2022, utilizing school property and <a href="https://ultramining.com/news/en/minnesota-man-faces-accusations-of-electricity-theft-for-bitcoin-mining/">electricity</a> to fuel their crypto mining farm. This operation reportedly funneled between $1 million to $1.5 million in mined cryptocurrency directly into their personal wallets, according to <a href="https://crypto.news/u-s-authorities-charge-school-staff-over-illegal-crypto-mining-operation/">Crypto</a>. 
The case, which has now caught the eye of the FBI, involved more than just the unauthorized mining of digital currencies. Menge and Drabert are accused of engaging in additional theft, including fraudulent transactions exceeding $1.2 million through a Nevada-based company controlled by Menge. These funds were not only channeled into the crypto mining operation but also allegedly used for personal gains such as home renovations and the purchase of luxury vehicles, including a Ferrari. The impact of their actions extends beyond financial loss, raising questions about the ethical use of school district resources and the security of educational institutions’ infrastructure against misuse for crypto mining activities. 
With sentencing scheduled for May 30, 2024, the accused face up to 10 years in prison and fines up to $250,000.&nbsp;&nbsp;
