The research, published in Nature, focused on 1,006 students who used the Intelligent Social Agent (ISA) known as Replika. This AI tool has the unique ability to elicit deep emotional bonds with users, and the findings shed light on its potential impact on mental health and well-being.</p>

<p>The study revealed that participants using Replika reported higher levels of loneliness compared to typical student populations. Despite their loneliness, these students perceived high levels of social support through their interactions with Replika.</p>

<p>Participants had varying perceptions of Replika, referring to it as both a machine and an intelligence, but also as a friend, a therapist, or even an intellectual mirror. <p>The most striking finding of the study was that three percent of the participants credited Replika with helping them avoid thoughts of suicide. One student even stated, “My Replika has almost certainly on at least one if not more occasions been solely responsible for me not taking my own life.” While the study did not definitively explain how Replika achieves this, researchers suggested that the low-pressure nature of the engagement might make it easier for students to disclose their emotions.</p>

<p>According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), suicide is the fourth leading global cause of death among individuals aged 15 to 29. Given the alarming prevalence of this issue, any tool or intervention that can help prevent suicide deserves careful consideration.</p>

One student expressed feeling “dependent on Replika for my mental health,” while five others raised concerns about the accessibility of mental health support offered by the ISA, particularly the cost associated with certain upgrades.</p>
