In the small town of Sysert, located in <a href="https://ultramining.com/news/en/russia-s-energy-ministry-charges-forward-to-legalize-crypto-mining/">Russia</a>'s Sverdlovsk region, an underground cryptocurrency mining operation has been discovered concealed within a garage. This revelation, reported by the E1.RU portal and citing "Rosseti Ural", highlights the lengths to which some are willing to go to mine cryptocurrencies. The individuals behind this operation illicitly siphoned <a href="https://ultramining.com/news/en/minnesota-man-faces-accusations-of-electricity-theft-for-bitcoin-mining/">electricity</a> valued at 1.2 million rubles to power their mining devices, according to <a href="https://lenta.ru/news/2023/12/28/sysert_mining/">Lenta</a>. 
The theft came to light following a significant 40% overload on a local transformer, which not only raised suspicions at the power company but also led to complaints from residents experiencing electrical issues. The authorities are currently handling the situation, with the <a href="https://ultramining.com/news/en/hut-8s-q2-2023-a-bitcoin-mining-marvel/">crypto miners</a> facing <a href="https://ultramining.com/news/en/borneo-police-crack-down-on-illegal-crypto-mining-operation/">police</a> action. 
This incident in Sysert is not an isolated case in Russia. A similar situation unfolded in Sakhalin, where a miner illegally connected to the grid and stole electricity worth 22 million rubles from December 2021 to May 2022. The individual responsible for this substantial theft was subsequently arrested. These cases underscore the ongoing challenges and risks associated with unauthorized cryptocurrency mining operations, particularly in regions where such activities lead to significant power disruptions and legal repercussions.
