In the race to become a crypto hub, South Korean authorities are focusing more on investor protection and exploring innovative solutions for the next phase of crypto regulations. During a Seoul conference on Digital Currencies on December 13, 2023, Kim So-young, South Korea’s vice financial regulator chief, highlighted the need for regulations to strike a balance between investor protection and fostering technological advancements. The conference was held following the Bank of Korea’s initiation of a project in October aimed at developing a wholesale central bank digital currency (CBDC). This marks a significant step in South Korea’s commitment to exploring the potential of digital currencies.&nbsp; 
Earlier this year, South Korea also passed legislation to bring virtual assets under regulatory control, with a focus on safeguarding investor interests. However, the new regulations are scheduled to effect in July 2024. 
This ongoing development was initiated because of several cryptocurrency issues, including an alleged <a href="https://news.todayq.com/do-kwon-set-to-extradite-us-rather-than-south-korea/">fraud involving South Korean crypto entrepreneur Do Kwon</a>. The incident raised concerns among both the public and regulators, highlighting the need for comprehensive oversight in crypto markets.&nbsp;

Additionally, on December 8, 2023, South Korea held a <a href="https://news.todayq.com/u-s-south-korea-japan-discuss-north-koreas-illicit-activities-with-stolen-crypto/">high-level meeting</a> with top national security officials from the United States and Japan in Seoul. These trilateral talks were held for investor protection as well as to discuss North Korea’s illicit activities. This event happened because North Korea is utilizing stolen crypto to support its nuclear and ballistic missile program and many other illicit activities. However, in the last five years, they have stolen more than $2 billion worth of crypto assets.
