<p>In a surprising revelation, the Video Game History Foundation (VGHF) has unveiled previously unseen content from Sonic the Hedgehog 2, shedding light on zones that were axed during the game’s development to meet deadlines. The foundation, known for its commitment to preserving video game history, recently shared insights into the cut content as part of its annual Winter Fundraiser donation drive.</p>

<p>The highlight of this unveiling is the Cyber City Zone, formerly known as Genocide City Zone, which has been partially reconstructed by the VGHF. Through meticulous scanning of design documents from Sonic 2 artist Tom Payne’s collection, including sprite art and color palette details, the foundation managed to breathe life into a once-lost stage. Access to Sonic 2 game designer Hirokazu Yasuhara’s map for the stage and sketches of individually designed ‘chunks’ provided a blueprint for the reconstruction.</p>
<p>By combining Yasuhara’s map with Payne’s documents, the VGHF has successfully created a glimpse into what a completed Cyber City Zone would have looked like. The reconstructed footage can be viewed at the 14-minute mark in the VGHF’s latest video on cut content.</p>

<p>The VGHF didn’t stop at Cyber City Zone; it also shared content from artist Brenda Cook, who worked on three cut zones for Sonic 2. While Wood Zone and Sand Shower Zone had surfaced in early screenshots and leaked prototypes, the winter stage had remained unseen until now.</p>
<p>Cook’s VHS portfolio, acquired by the VGHF, unveiled animated sprites from canceled games and provided a first-ever look at the winter stage. The foundation’s commitment to preserving these historical artifacts allows fans to catch a glimpse of what might have been.</p>
