Individuals posing as Forbes journalists have recently been targeting Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) owners in a fraudulent scheme aimed at distracting them while attempting to steal their valuable NFT apes. A BAYC owner shared an incident in which he narrowly avoided what could have been a disastrous situation after being contacted by someone he initially believed was conducting an interview for Forbes.On November 27, a nonfungible token (NFT) collector known as &#34;Crumz&#34; recounted his encounter with a scammer posing as a Forbes journalist. The imposter, pretending to be Robert LaFanco, a real Forbes editor, reached out to Crumz via direct message, offering an interview opportunity for a new article about BAYC. During the interview, the scammer requested permission to record the conversation, and Crumz, despite noticing some suspicious signs such as the use of a non-premium Zoom account and the desire to employ a separate recorder bot to capture his screen, complied with the so-called journalist&#39;s request.Crumz later realized that the request to mention something resembling his ape, particularly a banana, was a ploy to distract him from his computer. The attacker&#39;s intention was to gain control of his computer and steal his assets during this diversionary tactic.Rather than fetching a banana, Crumz opted to remain at his computer, and as expected, the scammers attempted to take control of his screen. He managed to thwart their efforts when they ventured onto the delegate.cash platform.A partner of the crypto casino Rollbit, known as borowik.eth, issued a warning to his 140,000 followers on November 27. He identified a fraudulent account named Robert LaFranco, which falsely claimed to be a Forbes assistant managing editor, and cautioned against engaging with this imposter. He revealed that during the interview, the impersonator tried to deceive individuals into granting access to their PCs with the ulterior motive of pilfering their valuable NFTs.Laura Rod, a member of the BAYC community, also reported being contacted by the bogus Forbes editor.In a previous report, blockchain security firm Slowmist exposed a series of scams where victims lost cryptocurrency assets to fake journalists. The scammers would arrange an interview, guide victims to a Telegram interview, present an interview outline, conduct a two-hour interview, and then provide a malicious link under the guise of consenting to publication.In a separate incident in October, a user on Friend.tech fell victim to a fake Bloomberg journalist who enticed them to click on a link for a &#34;consent form,&#34; resulting in a drained Friend.tech account.Furthermore, it has been observed by industry experts that scammers on social media platform X often use BAYC profile pictures, making it a crucial point of vigilance for potential victims.
