F-Zero 99 Receives Major Update Introducing Classic Race Mode and Lucky Cards

In a recent update announced on Nintendo’s Japanese website, F-Zero 99, the massively multiplayer racing game for the Switch, is set to receive a substantial version 1.1.0 update on November 29. The highlight of this update is the introduction of a new game mode called “Classic Race.” This mode aims to bring players closer to the original SNES F-Zero experience by mirroring its rules and gameplay.

Classic Race mode, focusing on online races, distinguishes itself by limiting the number of participants to 20, in stark contrast to the chaotic 99-racer battles of the standard mode. The removal of the Spin Attack move and the Skyway mid-air track aligns the gameplay with the elements of the original SNES F-Zero. Players won’t be able to increase their Power Meter through knockouts, adding an extra layer of challenge.

Unlike the standard F-Zero 99 mode, where players have the freedom to use turbo boosts at will, Classic Race introduces a strategic element. Participants are granted a single-use turbo boost each time they complete a lap, encouraging a more calculated approach to speed management.

To enhance the SNES inspiration, Classic Race mode adopts a 4:3 screen ratio, reminiscent of the original F-Zero on the SNES, diverging from the modern 16:9 widescreen format. This decision reinforces the commitment to recreating the classic gaming experience within the contemporary multiplayer setting.

Introducing lucky cards: A new dimension to racing rewards

Accompanying the Classic Race mode in the version 1.1.0 update is the introduction of a new feature called “Lucky Cards.” This feature adds an element of unpredictability to the game by recording the player’s finishing position and chosen car over five races. Subsequently, this data is compared with a randomly generated Lucky Card that features various numbers and cars. Players receive rewards based on the matches between their recorded data and the Lucky Card, adding a fresh layer of excitement to F-Zero 99’s competitive landscape.

Lucky Cards provide an additional incentive for players to consistently perform well in races, as the rewards are directly tied to the accuracy of the match between the recorded data and the randomly generated card. This innovative feature not only introduces an element of chance but also adds strategic depth to the decision-making process, as players must consider their finishing position and car choice carefully.

Takaya Imamura expresses gratitude for F-Zero’s return

The unexpected release of F-Zero 99 in September prompted a wave of nostalgia and appreciation from fans of the classic series. Takaya Imamura, the former Nintendo artist responsible for creating the iconic characters and vehicles in F-Zero, publicly expressed his gratitude to Nintendo for reviving the beloved franchise. Imamura’s acknowledgment underscores the significance of F-Zero’s return to the gaming scene, bridging the gap between gaming eras and capturing the attention of both longtime fans and a new generation of players.

The version 1.1.0 update for F-Zero 99 brings a nostalgic twist to the modern gaming experience with the introduction of Classic Race mode and the unpredictability of Lucky Cards. As players prepare to engage in strategic turbo management and embrace the 4:3 screen ratio reminiscent of the SNES era, F-Zero 99 continues to evolve, offering a compelling blend of retro charm and contemporary multiplayer excitement.
