<p>The use of artificial intelligence (AI) to generate synthetic content is booming on YouTube. In response to this trend, the platform has decided to tighten its rules: creators must now disclose their use of AI or face penalties.</p>

Creators are now required to state when they have used AI tools to generate their content. This includes videos depicting fictional events or featuring people doing or saying things they haven’t actually done.</p>

<p>“<em>We require creators to disclose when they have created modified or synthetic content that is realistic, including using AI tools</em>.”</p>
<p>Specifically, creators will need to make this disclosure in two ways. First, they will add a label in the video description. Second, for sensitive topics like politics or health, they will apply a tag directly on the video player.</p>
<p>The goal is to allow viewers to know when a video has been artificially produced. YouTube thus aims to combat misinformation and deepfakes.</p>
<p>The sanctions set by YouTube are clear. Creators who fail to disclose AI usage risk having their videos removed. They can then be barred from the monetization program or suspended from the platform.</p>
<p>YouTube <a href="https://cointelegraph.com/news/youtube-creators-must-disclose-gen-ai-use-or-face-suspension" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">explains</a> that it will work with creators to help them apply these guidelines. But those who knowingly break the rules will not be treated leniently.</p>
<h2 id="h-the-strengthened-fight-against-deepfakes">The Strengthened Fight Against Deepfakes</h2>
<p>In addition to the disclosure of AI, YouTube also announces a reinforcement in its fight against deepfakes. It has stated that it will integrate a new feature that allows users to request the removal of a synthetic video that “<em>simulates an identifiable individual, including their face or voice, using our privacy request process</em>”.</p>
<p>The platform will also collaborate with the music industry to remove content that uses AI to generate music or counterfeit artists’ voices. Many artists including Tom Hanks, Mr. Beast, Gayle King, and Jennifer Aniston have complained about the explosion of AI-generated titles unlawfully exploiting their vocal and instrumental samples.</p>
<p>YouTube thus aims to address growing concerns over abuses related to deepfakes and AI-generated music. The platform had already taken actions this summer by establishing principles with the music industry. These new guidelines reinforce its stance and transparency on these challenging issues.</p>
