<p>Elon Musk’s ultimate vision for Neuralink is to achieve a symbiosis with artificial intelligence. Musk has voiced concerns, shared by many in the AI community, that superintelligent AI systems could pose a significant risk to humanity. As AI progresses, the gap between human communication capabilities (roughly 39 bits per second) and AI’s ability to process information (up to a trillion bits per second) becomes more apparent. In Musk’s view, to avoid being left behind and potentially dominated by AI, humans should strive to merge with it.</p>

<p>Neuralink’s approach has stirred controversy, as it involves a highly invasive procedure. The company’s brain implant, equipped with 1,024 electrodes, requires drilling a hole in the skull and penetrating the brain. For instance, Synchron uses stent technology to implant sensors in the brain via blood vessels, eliminating the need for open brain surgery.</p>

<p>One reason behind Neuralink’s choice of a more invasive procedure is its emphasis on maximizing bandwidth. More electrodes allow for a higher number of neurons to be monitored, resulting in better data quality. The company’s quest for higher bandwidth is in alignment with Musk’s overarching goal of unlocking the full potential of human-AI symbiosis.</p>

<p>The focus on maximizing bandwidth, however, raises ethical and safety concerns. More invasive procedures, such as the one employed by Neuralink, carry greater risks, including potential brain damage. According to international research ethics guidelines, using a more invasive technology when less invasive methods can achieve similar results may not be ethical.</p>

<p>Precision Neuroscience has introduced a “Goldilocks solution” with a thin film that contains 1,024 electrodes, similar to Neuralink’s implant. The film is inserted through a slit in the skull but rests on the brain’s surface without penetrating it. This approach maintains high bandwidth while minimizing the risk of brain damage. However, Musk’s desire for maximum bandwidth has driven Neuralink to favor a more invasive approach.</p>

<p>The controversy surrounding Neuralink underscores the need to balance innovation with ethical considerations. While Elon Musk’s vision of merging humans with AI is futuristic and potentially transformative, it’s crucial to address safety, privacy, and ethical concerns. As neurotechnology continues to advance, society must prepare itself for the profound changes it may bring.
