<p>The tech and IT craze gripping Nigeria and indeed most of the African continent has been well documented. But despite the revolution, the sector still doesn’t have nearly as many opportunities as one might expect. Instead, it is Nigeria’s Human Resource (HR) industry that contributes the most vacancies as HR jobs are more available.</p> 
<p>This is according to a study conducted by <a href="https://resume.io/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Resume.io</a>. The study relied on data from LinkedIn by first retrieving the number of job ads posted on LinkedIn’s job search engine overall and for each industry before calculating which industry had the highest proportion of job ads in each country.</p> 
<p>Even though Nigeria recently reevaluated its <a href="https://technext24.com/2021/05/06/lagos-moves-to-reduce-unemployment-rate-by-placing-4000-youths-on-n40000-internship/" data-type="post" data-id="112994" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">unemployment rate</a> with a new methodology which saw the unemployment rate reduce from 33.3 per cent to 4.1 per cent overnight, the truth remains that tens of millions of Nigerians are looking for jobs to earn a respectable income. Most of them rely on job agencies to help out.</p> 
<p>Moreover, as organisations continue to develop a more robust and advanced process of employee relations management, more and more companies are investing resources into HR departments and personnel to help ensure that the welfare of employees remains paramount. This explains the availability of HR jobs as almost every organization either has a department or outsources it.</p> 
<p>Speaking about the need for HR jobs, Dr Huw Flatau-Harrison of Deakin University noted that the rise of robots is even more reason why organisations will continue needing human resource services.</p> 
<p>“The fact that you still have that need to have someone in there that can have that interpersonal relationship, and that kind of skillset, means that it (HR jobs) is one of those jobs that’s still going very well and even growing because it’s not being taken over by the robots,” he says.</p>

<h2 id="hr-jobs-not-the-most-available-in-africa">HR jobs not the most available in Africa</h2> 
<p>While the IT and tech sector might not be the highest hiring industry in Nigeria, there are still countries in Africa where the sector is adjudged to be the highest employer of labour. They include Kenya, Ethiopia and Tunisia where the software development sector has the most vacancies, and Morocco where IT services and consulting hold sway.</p> 
<p>In neighbouring Ghana, the sector employing the most workers is higher education, while in Uganda it is education administration. In South Africa, mining doesn’t come close as the sector hiring the most South Africans is staffing and recruiting, the same as Senegal and Chad. Angola, Africa’s second-largest oil producer, also has HR services as the highest employing sector, Algeria is the only recorded oil-producing country that doesn’t have HR services as its biggest employer. Banking is the highest employer in the North African country.</p> 
<p>Globally though, one tech sector seems to be hiring the most, with IT services and IT consulting doing the most hiring in 28 countries. This is tied with the Staffing and Recruiting sector which is also doing the most hiring in 28 countries, the highest of any other sector. In the US, the restaurant sector is adjudged to be providing more jobs than any other sector with as much as 2 out of every three Americans having worked in a restaurant before.</p>

<p>“We analysed local LinkedIn job listings in 129 countries to discover the one industry advertising the highest proportion of vacancies. In 28 countries including France (and Nigeria), jobs in staffing and recruitment are the most often advertised,” the report says.</p> 
<h3 id="people-in-oil-producing-countries-still-prefer-oil-and-gas-jobs">People in oil-producing countries still prefer oil and gas jobs</h3> 
<p>Apart from determining which sectors provide the most jobs, the study also delves into which sectors are the most sought-after and most preferred by job seekers in different countries. Interestingly, in oil-producing countries, the oil and gas industry appears to be the most sought-after. This is true in countries like Nigeria and Angola where oil and gas jobs are the most preferred. In Algeria, however, banking remains the most sought-after.</p> 
<p>In Tunisia, software development jobs still remain the most sought-after. In Ghana, jobs in higher education remain the most sought-after. Despite software development providing the most vacancies in Kenya, jobs in higher education appear to be the most sought-after. Morocco and Algeria have banking, South Africa has staffing and recruiting, while Congo DR has hospitality.</p> 
<p>The study calculates which industry has the most uniquely popular presence in local job markets by isolating the industry with the highest percentage of job ads in a location vs. the global average of job ads being posted for that industry.</p>
