The Whole Earth Foundation (WEF), a non-profit organization responsible for building, providing, and operating a civic participation-based infrastructure information platform, is actively promoting activities to inspect aging infrastructure with the power of citizens, under the motto “Protecting Infrastructure Together with Citizens.”In August, in addition to official events, grassroots-led events known as “D-Wars” were held across the country, and activities related to TEKKON took place every week. The circle of railway enthusiasts, known as “鉄活,” is expanding not only in Japan but also worldwide.We are utilizing the socially good Web3 app, “TEKKON,” to engage citizens in a nationwide inspection of infrastructure. By providing infrastructure image data collected by citizens to local governments and infrastructure companies for maintenance and management, we aim to address the social issue of aging infrastructure, create a low-cost infrastructure conservation ecosystem through citizen participation, and bridge the gap to safe infrastructure for the next generation.The results achieved through the cooperation of citizens up to August 2023 are as follows:Citizens have collected over 930,000 utility pole submissions, with daily submissions on the rise! Since its general release on October 15, 2022, “TEKKON” has gathered manhole data from around the world, with the current number of submissions totaling approximately 4.16 million.Moreover, the number of utility pole submissions has increased due to higher individual submission rates, resulting in an acceleration of infrastructure data collection. Currently, over 930,000 utility pole data submissions have been received, with 100,000 poles being photographed in one month.<img src="https://academy-public.coinmarketcap.com/srd-optimized-uploads/bef750f8623a4b08802c6ca1dc17a9b4.png" />Utility Pole Battles in Tohoku and Niigata yield continuous completions! Starting in April this year, we have been collaborating with Tohoku Electric Network Company to conduct demonstration events in all prefectures of Tohoku plus Niigata. We have successfully achieved the target submission numbers at all events held in Miyagi, Yamagata, Iwate, Aomori, Akita, and other regions.Four more demonstration experiments remain for future consideration. An ecosystem for safeguarding town infrastructure with the participation of citizens and infrastructure companies is emerging.<img src="https://academy-public.coinmarketcap.com/srd-optimized-uploads/740a48e5407740a2a786e84f11e614ab.png" />User communities also emerge in the Philippines. In the Philippines, we organized the “Utility Pole Battles in the Philippines” event in Pasig. Like in Japan, infrastructure data is being collected from various regions. However, aging infrastructure has become a significant societal issue.WEF believes that there is a way to solve this problem by involving ordinary citizens in the process and preventing infrastructure collapse.
