A crafty miner in Sakhalin faces serious legal repercussions following a grand <a href="https://ultramining.com/news/en/crypto-mining-with-flare-gas-a-green-solution-or-environmental-setback/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">electricity</a> theft. According to the Department of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation in the Sakhalin region, the individual, born in 1985, orchestrated a scheme siphoning off <a href="https://ultramining.com/news/en/crypto-mining-with-flare-gas-a-green-solution-or-environmental-setback/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">electricity</a> amounting to 22 million rubles. This criminal endeavor spanned from December 2020 to May 2022, according to <a href="https://newscryptocoin.com/news/saxalinskij-majner-ukral-elektroenergii-na-22-mln-rublej/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">newscryptocoin</a>. 
During this period, the Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk resident illegally tapped into the "Sakhalinenergo" networks. Subsequently, he powered his mining operations via a personal transformer substation boasting a capacity of 1,250 kVA. Interestingly, this setup was housed within a construction company's territory. Furthermore, the power fueled two 40-foot containers, which accommodated an array of ASIC miners. 
Representatives of "Sakhalinenergo" revealed that the miner misappropriated a staggering 4 million kWh, equating to 22 million rubles in monetary value. Consequently, the authorities instigated a criminal case under Part 2 of Article 165 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. This article addresses "causing property damage on a particularly large scale by deception or breach of trust". Now, with the <a href="https://ultramining.com/news/en/borneo-police-crack-down-on-illegal-crypto-mining-operation/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">police</a> wrapping up the <a href="https://ultramining.com/news/en/large-scale-cryptocurrency-mining-farm-uncovered-in-dagestans-kizilyurtovsky-district/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">investigation</a>, the case documents are on their way to the Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk City Court. As a result, the illicit miner stares down a potential 5-year prison sentence. 
Remarkably, this is not an isolated incident in the region. A previous report highlighted another individual in Krasnoyarsk who capitalized on the public network for his mining setup.
