China continues its stern crackdown on cryptocurrency-related activities. Recently, four executives at Filecoin mining firm Shenzhen Shikongyun Technology faced criminal charges in Guangxi for running a pyramid scheme. Prosecutors accuse the firm of exaggerating investment potential and defrauding nearly 100,000 people of more than US$83 million. Members were lured with high returns and persuaded to buy or lease crypto mining equipment. 
The firm's actions are described as a serious criminal offence disrupting social and economic order. These charges emphasize China's ongoing hostility towards cryptocurrencies since banning bitcoin financial transactions in 2018. Meanwhile, the country is ranking 10th in global crypto adoption, highlighting a persistence in crypto use despite the ban. 
While Beijing maintains a tight grip on virtual assets within mainland China, Hong Kong has been greenlit to develop into a crypto hub. Hong Kong authorities have already begun laying out rules for retail trading on centralized crypto exchanges. 
In sum, China's intense scrutiny and stringent actions against cryptocurrency-related activities signal its unwavering stance, while concurrently paving the way for controlled crypto development in Hong Kong.
