<p>Despite being the prime market for NFTs, Ethereum has long been troubled by the niche issue of static or “dumb” NFTs, which can only sit on a blockchain to be viewed or traded. Demand has grown for NFTs with more capabilities, as seen by articles discussing “advanced” or “dynamic” NFTs. Such NFTs include those that are nontransferable, changeable, combinable, or can be bundled. However, almost every project promising these features has failed to provide a decentralized solution. But what does this mean and why should you care?</p><p>Assuming that your basic NFT can become more advanced by “upgrading” it, if the solution is centralized, it’s akin to using another version of Facebook or Instagram. The advanced features of your NFTs are only cool protocols running on a centralized server that can be shut down at any time. So despite many claims of the dawn of advanced or dynamic NFTs on Ethereum, this has been a mirage for those concerned with the principles of decentralization — like censorship-resistant total ownership.</p><p>Thankfully, RMRK, a development team committed to making the advanced NFT dream a reality, has brought fully decentralized advanced NFT capabilities to Ethereum. Any project can now use its standards without fear of losing access to their work. A quick google search will reveal that different projects have different advanced capabilities. Some projects when they say ‘advanced’ may only refer to the fact that an NFT can change its look based on certain conditions being met. For example, there is a project whose NFTs react to the time of day. i.e. when it’s daytime, the NFT background will feature a sun and when it’s nighttime, the background will change to feature the moon. Unfortunately, if the concept of an advanced NFT was only carried by one ‘cool’ ability, this would hardly be reason enough to justify the new ‘advanced’ tag. So, in a sense, most articles talking about advanced NFTs are selling a pipe dream. Enter the RMRK flavor of advanced NFTs. In addition to being decentralized, RMRK’s execution of the advanced NFT concept is founded upon 5 separate but complimentary capabilities/superpowers/building blocks.</p><ul><li><strong>Nestable</strong> - the ability for NFTs to own and be owned by other NFTs.</li><li><strong>Multi-asset</strong> - the ability for NFTs to have more than one asset attached to them. Basic NFTs can only hold one asset (the jpg in the case of a profile picture (pfp) collection).</li><li><strong>Equippable</strong> - the ability for NFTs to equip or be equipped by other NFTs. Imagine a game character equipping a new weapon. That is now possible if both the character and weapon are built using RMRK’s NFT standards.</li><li><strong>Emotable</strong> - the ability for NFTs to receive emojis on-chain.</li><li><strong>Soulbound</strong> - originally proposed by Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin, this is the ability for an NFT to be bound to an account or other NFT such that it can’t be transferred or traded. This is perfect for on-chain reputation building.</li></ul><p>The beauty of this system is that you can create any project you wish by combining the different superpowers. To better appreciate what this means, let’s consider what makes advanced NFTs possible.</p><h2 id="header-1">What makes advanced NFTs possible?</h2><p>I previously criticized some proponents of advanced NFTs for offering centralized solutions. Now I&#39;ll explain what I mean when I say that RMRK’s advanced NFT capabilities are decentralized.</p><p>Advanced NFTs are made possible by the fact that Ethereum allows any developer to suggest new standards to be added to the Ethereum core protocol. This means that once a new standard is proposed and accepted, it becomes part of the protocol and can be used by anyone to build whatever they want. For example, ERC-721(i.e. the standard that enables the creation and utility of non-fungible tokens) was not always available on Ethereum. It was created by William Entriken, Dieter Shirley, Jacob Evans, and Nastassia Sachs.</p><p>Similarly, all 5 advanced capabilities listed above are enabled by new ERC standards that were originally proposed by the RMRK team and then approved by the Ethereum developer community. These are:</p><ol><li><a href="https://rmrk.link/3scx8eQ" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">ERC-5773</a> - enables a single NFT to have multiple outputs, solving the age-old problem of cross-game skins among other things.</li><li><a href="https://rmrk.link/442O5pj" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">ERC-6059</a> - enables an NFT to contain other NFTs (also known as nesting). Note that a new version of this standard is currently in draft and will reviewed soon.</li><li><a href="https://rmrk.link/3DWi0Vk" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">ERC-6220</a> - enables the creation of composable NFTs using equippable parts. This means that multiple NFTs can be combined into a single NFT.</li><li><a href="https://rmrk.link/47uV3pS" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">ERC-6454</a> - enables the creation of non-transferable (soulbound) NFTs.</li><li><a href="https://rmrk.link/3KDsDQG" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">ERC-6381</a> - allows NFTs to receive emojis. Note that a new version of this standard is currently in draft and will reviewed soon.</li></ol><p>Thus, if you build anything using these standards, you are guaranteed that it will work exactly as advertised because the process of passing an ERC is a very stringent one. Furthermore, if you find projects selling you the dream of advanced NFTs without the relevant ERC standards to support their claim, then be wary about using them as there could be centralized components at play and your new advanced NFT project may not be future proof.</p><p>To better appreciate what RMRK has done with getting these standards to the Ethereum community, let’s explore a couple of live projects that are built using it.</p><h2 id="header-2">Examples of RMRK-powered advanced NFT projects</h2><h3 id="evrloot">Evrloot</h3><p>This is an RPG game on Moonbeam (an EVM layer-1 on Polkadot) that is built using RMRK’s advanced NFT capabilities. Due to this, NFTs in this game can be nested and equipped to other NFTs. What’s more, all these clothes and weapon NFTs are nested into the character NFT such that this character NFT is the registered on-chain owner of all the NFTs (you can verify this for yourself by checking <a href="https://singular.app/collectibles/moonbeam/0x9d1454e198f4b601bfc0069003045b0cbc0e6749/14" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Singular</a>).</p><p><img src="https://academy-public.coinmarketcap.com/optimized-uploads/e87e1bf0a532435cb8c99cf00aa21bbb.png" /></p><p>As such, the holder of this character can choose to sell the character and all his childNFTs (clothes and weapons), only the character (but first sending all the clothes and weapons to his/her wallet), or any of these clothes or weapons. I don’t think I need to explain just how immersive this makes the game. Following just one week of launching on the Moonbeam network, <a href="https://game.evrloot.com/game" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Evrloot</a> rose the top of the usage charts, boasting the most transactions and #4 most unique daily accounts.</p><h3 id="kanaria">Kanaria</h3><p>This is the first ever advanced NFT collection. It was created by the RMRK team as a proof-of-concept to showcase and validate its advanced NFT framework. It’s a collection of 9000&#43; birds that possess every single advanced capability. Check out <a href="https://kanaria.rmrk.app/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Kanaria</a>.</p><p><img src="https://academy-public.coinmarketcap.com/optimized-uploads/9b2fc0b39925439da3c2a4f8a64269fe.jpeg" /></p><ul><li>Birds own items (other NFTs) and can transfer or sell these NFTs. These include backgrounds, foreground items, backpacks, eyewear, etc.</li><li>Birds own nontransferable gems that give them certain perks. I.e. the Njord gem gives the holder a percentage of RMRK’s earnings. Other gems remove commissions on Singular marketplace, give the holder the ability to add a new image asset to their bird.</li><li>Birds receive emojis. This was used in a gamified way by the RMRK team during a couple of campaigns. It was so engaging it broke the Kusama blockchain (Polkadot’s canary chain and the first home of the Kanaria collection and RMRK).</li></ul><h2 id="header-3">How to get started with advanced NFTs on Ethereum</h2><p>Depending on who you are—developer, creator, project founder, collector—there are different ways to get started with RMRK’s advanced NFT framework.</p><h3 id="create-and-trade-advanced-nfts-on-singular">Create and trade advanced NFTs on Singular</h3><p>Creators, collectors, and project founders can create and trade advanced NFT collections on <a href="https://rmrk.link/3DWoOm6" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Singular</a>. You simply specify the criteria you require and then the wizard does most of the heavy lifting.</p><h3 id="upgrade-your-basic-erc-721-nfts-to-advanced-nfts">Upgrade your basic ERC-721 NFTs to advanced NFTs</h3><p>The RMRK team released <a href="https://upgradooor.app/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Upgradooor</a>, a dApp that enables you to upgrade your static ERC-721 NFTs into their super powered versions. It’s a very simple process. You go to the website, connect your wallet, and then specify the NFT you wish to upgrade. Upon clicking upgrade, your ERC-721 NFT will be locked in a guardian contract and then a perfect copy will be minted to your wallet. This new NFT possesses all the capabilities of RMRK’s advanced NFT stack. Note that for any NFT to be upgradeable, the collection owner/creator needs to opt into this service. As an NFT holder, you can always regain your static ERC-721 NFT by ‘downgrading’ the NFT.</p><h3 id="emote-on-any-nft-even-erc-721">Emote on any NFT, even ERC-721</h3><p>The <a href="https://rmrk.link/3shTH1q" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Emotes dApp</a> released by the RMRK team enables anyone to drop emojis on Ethereum NFTs. You don’t need to be the NFT holder to do this. It’s a pretty simple and fun tool that could help drive discovery of NFTs.
