<h2 id="header-0">Hot Topic: Asset Download Prioritisation</h2><p><em>Developer Diaries aim to give a transparent view to our community on how the build of Bloktopia is progressing. We value your loyalty and passion for our project, and we will be sharing as much information as we can about 1 specific feature — hopefully at the end of each week!</em></p><p><em>We will continue to work in an agile manner, and will be adapting and optimising our roadmap continuously. That is the nature of building a metaverse. Some things we share here might not ever come to fruition, but our goal will be to set clear expectations and communicate with you all about the upcoming roadmap and priorities.</em></p><p>This <a href="https://medium.com/&#64;bloktopia/bloktopia-developer-diaries-1-1827868741ba" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">weekly Developer Diary update</a> is our final edition of the series that focuses on the theme of removing barriers to entry.</p><p>Why have we focused hard on this topic with our development? It’s simple- we want large numbers of users to enjoy the Metaverse with a low barrier to entry- such as easy to download or stream, minimal install time, quick to enter with small updates/patches etc.). Users also want things to feel responsive and fast, with great amounts of customisation built in for the ultimate Metaverse experience and rightly so, but the challenge here to build all of this is immense!</p><p>Let’s just focus on user numbers to start. One hundred users, which is our starting number per room for events (of which there are multiple rooms). Each avatar consists of at least 3 models totalling about 12–15mb of data. When you add that up the last user who joins a room (assuming they don’t know anyone in the room) this equals 1.2GB -1.5GB while also receiving movement, animation and audio updates from all these users while also streaming multimedia content as well.</p><h2 id="header-1"><strong>Why is this important to solve?</strong></h2><p>This is a huge amount of data to account for in a virtual world when trying to balance the user experience and expectations when joining.Users should be able to explore and meet new people and we don’t want to restrict where you can go and who you meet. We also want users to be completely in control of your identity and how they look to get the most out of the Metaverse experience.</p><h2 id="header-2">How do we solve it?</h2><p>In order to solve this huge technical challenge, we have multiple systems working together at all times, where we constantly assess and calculate a priority for the various items in the world.</p><p>With this priority, anything high value is prioritised for downloading or consuming higher quality visuals. This may sound alot like traditional <a href="https://medium.com/&#64;bloktopia/bloktopia-developer-diaries-12-b92be09a4d00" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">LOD</a>(Level of Detail) systems. Ours can process 32,000 items in around 0.05 milliseconds and takes into account not only distance and angle to content but also the size and priority in the world. The content can be prioritised if its a friend, presenter or someone broadcasting announcements. We can use this to acquire assets for a room the user wishes to enter that hasn’t been downloaded. In other words, pretty much everything!</p><p>The second part is a multithreaded download system which picks up only the highest value assets that aren’t already downloaded and starts downloading them. Finally everything in Bloktopia is broken down to its smallest size so we can pivot what we are downloading pretty quickly.</p><p>Here is a video of this system at work on a basic task of downloading a few avatars that highlights the difference.</p><react-video url="https://youtu.be/kpN_aO6JyDU"></react-video><p></p><h2 id="header-3">How does this affect users?</h2><p>Back to the example of one hundred users in one room- In our previous approach, it would wake about 3–5 minutes to acquire all the assets and show them. We haven’t made the internet faster, but with the priority systems in place visually, all avatars are completed in 20 seconds. Along side this, it finishes the remaining jobs over the next few minutes too, substantially speeding up the process and improving user experience!</p><p>In this example video, one hundred users are added into the room. The system then prioritises gathering as many lower quality visuals to fill the room with avatars as quickly as possible. Once a large portion of these are completed, it then shifts to higher quality avatars near the user. The example shows only avatars, but the system runs for everything from downloading entire rooms to small UI icons.</p><react-video url="https://youtu.be/8ESWkjiNI6g"></react-video><p></p><p>Ultimately, this has changed our approach to programming and designing. Since Bloktopia will be an ever changing world, we focus on acquiring the most immediate and most important experience for our users.
