According to recent <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/justice-department-revamps-crypto-enforcement-team-73638efb?mod=lead_feature_below_a_pos1" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">reports</a>, the US Justice Department (DoJ) revealed its plans to expand the size of its cryptocurrency crime unit by raising its staff of serving lawyers and deciding on its next head. 
<h2 id="span-style-font-weight-400-doj-to-double-crypto-team-s-manpower-span">DoJ to Double Crypto Team’s Manpower&nbsp;</h2> 
The DoJ published a speech that was delivered by Nicole Argentieri, Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies on 20 July.&nbsp; 
Argentieri stated in her statements about the merger of the Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Section and the National Cryptocurrency Enforcement Team, out of which later was founded just two years ago.&nbsp; 
It is expected that the number of criminal justice department lawyers working on criminal cryptocurrency cases will “more than double.” 
<h2 id="span-style-font-weight-400-doj-s-national-cryptocurrency-enforcement-team-span">DoJ’s National Cryptocurrency Enforcement Team</h2> 
As reported by TheCoinRise, the DoJ confirmed the foundation of a new department, <a href="https://thecoinrise.com/department-of-justice-establishes-new-cryptocurrency-team/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">The National Cryptocurrency Enforcement Team (NCET)</a>, in October 2021, to take on illicit crypto operations as well as hackers particularly from North Korea and Iran. 
Notably, NCET is going to continue to investigate and prosecute criminal offenses concerning crypto exploitation after collaborating with the CCIPS. Argentieri described the NCET as “an enormously successful startup,” emphasizing that the merging with a broader framework will offer it with fresh resources. 
<h2 id="span-style-font-weight-400-founding-director-eun-young-choi-span">Founding Director Eun Young Choi</h2> 
Argentieri congratulated the founding Director of NCET, Eun Young Choi, and praised the work she did and appointed Claudia Quiroz as the team’s new leader. Quiroz, a former assistant attorney in the United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of California, has served as NCET’s deputy director starting from its inception. 
<h3 id="doj-turns-focus-to-crypto">DoJ Turns Focus to Crypto</h3> 
In May, the US Department of Justice (DOJ) crypto team was said to have cracked down on <a href="https://thecoinrise.com/us-doj-has-set-its-eyes-on-crypto-hackers/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Decentralised Finance (DeFi) hackers</a> and exploiters amid a four-year rise in illicit crypto activity.&nbsp;The DoJ established a new <a href="https://thecoinrise.com/the-us-doj-announces-a-new-division-of-prosecutors-to-combat-illicit-activities-in-the-crypto-space/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">unit of more than 150 federal prosecutors</a> in September of last year with the purpose to combat unlawful activities involving cryptocurrency.&nbsp;
