Venezuela's national cryptocurrency, Petro, may be on the brink of closure. Bloomberg Linea reports suggest a likely shutdown of the oil-backed Petro, following a corruption scandal. Insiders from Sunacrip, the country's crypto watchdog, revealed these plans, hinting at the cryptocurrency's liquidation five years post-issuance, according to <a href="https://cryptodaily.co.uk/2023/06/reports-indicate-venezuela-might-shut-down-its-national-crypto">cryptodaily</a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 
Allegedly, this drastic move is part of Sunacrip's restructuring. Furthermore, Sunacrip intends to liquidate debts with large Petro holders. This group includes department stores that adopted Petro as a payment method. 
This reorganization was triggered by the arrest of Sunacrip's head, Joselit Ramirez. Accused of corruption, Ramirez faced expulsion by President Nicolas Madura. The allegations included stealing from national oil operations. Following this event, energy providers across Venezuela halted numerous crypto mining operations. 
The introduction of <a href="https://ultramining.com/news/en/venezuela-shuts-down-crypto-mining-facilities/">Petro</a> in 2018 aimed at circumventing sanctions from the Trump and Obama administrations. However, skepticism from global leaders and a ban on Petro trading by ex-President Trump marked its launch. Despite initial support, Venezuela no longer recognizes Petro as a currency.
