Ledger, a leading company in the field of hardware wallets for cryptocurrencies, has recently announced a new feature that aims to help users recover their funds in case they lose or damage their device. The feature, called phrase recovery, allows users to restore their 24-word recovery phrase that is used to access their crypto assets on a new or reset Ledger device.
However, the feature has been met with fierce criticism and backlash from some users who see it as a threat to their security and privacy. The main reason for their discontent is that the feature requires users to verify their identity with a government-issued ID and a selfie, and to store their recovery phrase online with a third-party provider. Users fear that this exposes them to potential hackers and scammers who could steal their identity and funds, or that it compromises the decentralized and anonymous nature of cryptocurrencies.
Some users have taken to Twitter to express their anger and distrust towards Ledger, using the hashtag #Ledger.
<blockquote>
 "I will never use this feature. Ledger is supposed to be a cold storage device, not an online service. This is a huge security risk and a betrayal of the crypto community".
</blockquote>
<blockquote>
 "This is why I switched to Trust Wallet. Ledger is becoming more centralized and invasive every day. Trust Wallet respects my privacy and gives me full control over my keys"
</blockquote>
Ledger has not responded to the criticism yet, but it claims that the phrase recovery feature is optional and that it uses end-to-end encryption and biometric verification to protect users' data. The company also states that the feature is designed to help users who have lost their recovery phrase or device, and that it does not affect the security of users who have safely backed up their recovery phrase offline. Ledger advises users to always keep their recovery phrase secret and secure, and to never share it with anyone.
While users are figuring out whether to move their tokens or not, true cryptocurrencies can always be stored by the user themselves. Removing the need for a trusted third party to safeguard their private keys.
