<h2 id="header-0">HOT TOPIC: Avatar movement in VR</h2><blockquote><em>Developer Diaries aim to give a transparent view to our community on how the build of Bloktopia is progressing. So, some things we share here, might not ever come to fruition, but our goal will be to set clear expectations and communicate with you all about the upcoming roadmap and priorities.</em></blockquote><p>Today marks the third entry into our <a href="https://medium.com/&#64;bloktopia/bloktopia-developer-diaries-1-1827868741ba" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">weekly Developer Diary update</a>, in our run up to the launch of the live Bloktopia metaverse! Today’s ‘Hot Topic’ was going to focus on VR Networking, but instead we have decided to focus it on ‘Avatar movement in VR’ following good progress this week.</p><h2 id="header-1">Developer Diaries: Hot topic of the week</h2><p>Developer Diaries will initially live here in Medium. We will look to include videos of our progress, as well as written narrative to help explain where we are at in the process and what our goals are. At this moment in time, that will help us to give the right level of detail, but over time we envisage that the diary updates might evolve into videos from our devs, and even live streamed updates straight out of the Bloktopia metaverse!</p><p>So, on to this week’s ‘Hot Topic’, which is ‘Avatar movement in VR’.</p><h2 id="header-2">What is ‘Avatar movement in VR’?</h2><p><a href="https://medium.com/&#64;bloktopia/bloktopia-partners-with-ready-player-me-for-metaverse-avatar-solution-11d1735aa937" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">As announced back in May 2022</a>, we have partnered with Ready Player Me (RPM) to provide our avatar solution in Bloktopia.</p><p><img src="https://miro.medium.com/max/1400/1*pPVYjiqIOyFYymO9xE0e-A.png" /></p><p>(Ready Player Me Avatars)</p><p>Ready Player Me’s (RPM) avatars, which can be made from a selfie, will allow Bloktopia visitors to create custom avatars with hundreds of different looks and styles to choose from. They will then be able to use their customised avatars in the Bloktopia metaverse, across a number of activities such as visiting virtual stores, attending events, playing games, and will also work across multiple other games and metaverses too, making it a truly interoperable solution.</p><h3 id="strong-vr-challenge-strong"><strong>VR challenge</strong></h3><p>The integration of RPM was a relatively straightforward process for the Alpha, as this was a non-VR experience. Therefore, as per any downloadable game experience where an avatar is visible, walking, running and breathing motions can be applied within Unity to bring the avatar to life, and make it look more realistic.</p><p>But VR is very different. The movement of a 3D avatar is essential in virtual reality in order to perform natural or emotional movement. The experience in VR therefore needs to be supported with an avatar which not only feels real to the user, but also to the multiple other users in the metaverse that can and will observe them.</p><p>This week we have succeeded in applying our players movement to an RPM avatar’s body. A unique challenge we face is that because players will all look different, the functionality of a player needs to be applied dynamically onto a simple avatar, when joining the metaverse.</p><p>We don’t build the solution, we build the process to apply that solution to the avatar, which is a ‘dynamic’ solution.</p><p>So, when players join the metaverse, we build the RPM avatar, and we apply the functionality to map your real movements to the avatar. Now we have developed this process, it will quickly grow to encompass the hands, interacting with the world, voice and facial animations, and much more, and then that will become a networked solution.</p><p>The below video demonstrates a custom avatar loading into the scene, and our solution for body movement and walking are dynamically applied to it.
