What is a Crypto Wallet? In its base form, a crypto wallet is an essential part of cryptocurrency transactions. A wallet is crucial for storing cryptocurrency received and sent between users. A cryptocurrency wallet functions much like a physical wallet that anyone would carry in their pocket; it keeps cards, cash, and, most importantly, essential keys or information. Within the blockchain, a wallet stores two main pieces of information. Firstly there are addresses, and secondly, there are keys. However, what exactly makes up these wallets, addresses, and keys? Furthermore, what types of these items are there? People who are new to cryptocurrency might often ask these questions, and luckily they can find the answers here.Cryptocurrency wallets today make the blockchain easily accessible to everyone. In contrast, transactions were a tough job when cryptocurrency was first introduced. Luckily, the software does all of the hard work for users. A crypto wallet can take many different forms. However, they primarily take the form of software applications on a phone or computer. These applications then connect to the internet to access the blockchain. There are two primary categories of wallets, as well as two subcategories.Types of Crypto WalletsThe two primary categories are custodial wallets and non-custodial wallets. A third-party source hosts a custodial wallet, and the user runs a non-custodial wallet. For a custodial wallet, the third-party source will protect your keys and offer higher security. Meanwhile, a non-custodial wallet leaves the data protection up to the user. These provide some overall benefits for each. While a custodial wallet offers an initially higher level of security, it could be more prone to a data breach. That is the difference between hot wallets which connect and cold wallets which do not connect to the internet. If a wallet stores its keys on the internet, it would be referred to as a hot wallet; if it keeps the keys offline, it would be a cold wallet. Within these two subcategories, there are numerous ways that a user can store information. For example, the most popular forms of keeping a wallet include software applications on a computer or phone, and holding the wallet on a separate hardware device such as a USB stick. Another popular form of storing a wallet is via the paper wallet, in which the user writes down all the wallet information on a piece of paper which is then stored securely. Finally, some distinctive wallets include sound wallets in which the user encrypts the data on an audio file; this type of wallet is quite rare.But what information is the wallet trying so hard to store? Cryptocurrency is constructed out of bits of data, and the wallet accesses this data through the blockchain using keys and addresses. Within a wallet, there are two primary keys. There is the private key and the public key.The Importance of Private Keys and Public KeysFirstly, looking at the private key is essentially the PIN of the wallet. To make any transaction, the user needs to know the private key, and whoever knows the private key can make transactions through that wallet. Every transaction made through the blockchain is signed off with the private key by the user sending the tokens. This key typically is 256 bits and thus would be rather difficult to remember. Because of this, the secret phrase was invented by crypto companies. This secret phrase is between 12-24 words generated by the wallet to access the private key. An example secret phrase that a user could have is something like, &#34;day fork lizard comfort house frame ignore push glass cheap mouse secret.&#34; This phrase is crucial to access the private key. The user is typically advised to write it down because it is essential to access the private key; if anyone discovers it, they could potentially steal all the funds in a wallet. That is why it is heavily advised not to tell anyone your private key information.This private key uses a mathematical algorithm called elliptic curve multiplication to generate a corresponding public key. This public key then generates what is known as the wallet address through another mathematical algorithm called hashing. The public key is similar to a bank account number and is what another person will use to be able to send funds to a wallet. Since blockchains such as Ethereum and Bitcoin are not anonymous but pseudonymous, anyone with access to a wallet address can see the transactions made by that wallet. The wallet address is between 25-40 characters and can look something like &#34;1A1zP1eP5QGefi2DMPTfTL5SLmv7DivfNa.&#34; That is the first bitcoin address ever to be generated, and today most addresses follow the same outline. One crucial difference is that EVM-compatible addresses will always start with 0x like this, &#34;0xacB69452d804c4aCAE2Ee19e18b8cBCf5E6204Ae.&#34; A wallet address can also be further simplified into a QR code for easy access and transaction purposes.In simple terms, these principles all work together linearly. For example, you create a wallet through any desired system, which makes a private key, and then this private key uses elliptic curve multiplication to generate a public key. This public key then uses hashing to create the wallet address. This wallet address can then create a QR code. While developing the wallet address may seem like it could be reversed to figure out the private key, have no fears. Both elliptic curve multiplication and hashing are one-way algorithms that no one can change. Thus, the private key is safe no matter who knows your public wallet address.ConclusionOverall, many different parts of the blockchain go into how transactions are made; however, they can be explained and identified as the wallet, private key, public key, and wallet address.
