The U.S. government
launched Tech Force on Monday to address critical skills gaps across artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and software engineering. Coinbase and Robinhood joined nearly 30 private sector partners lending workers for one- to two-year federal agency stints.
The Office of Personnel Management seeks 1,000 early-career candidates and experienced managers from Big Tech firms. Partner companies include Apple, Amazon Web Services, Nvidia and OpenAI, alongside the crypto platforms.
Tech Force workers will deploy across the Treasury, Commerce Department, IRS and other federal agencies. The agencies will hire and fund the positions, with private sector partners providing training support.
OPM director Scott Kupor
told CNBC that roughly 7% of the U.S. government workforce are early in their careers with five to seven years of experience. He said this compares to almost a quarter in the rest of the workforce.
The inclusion of Coinbase and Robinhood signals the government’s recognition of crypto expertise needs as the technology integrates into the financial system. Federal agencies increasingly require specialized knowledge in blockchain and
digital assets.
Kupor explained the initiative aims to demonstrate that government work is challenging and complex. He said workers can transition to private sector careers after their terms, with experience valued by future employers.
The OPM and private partners will host a job fair for workers completing their government service. This addresses concerns about career progression for early-career professionals entering public sector roles.
Private sector partners also include Adobe, AMD, Anduril, Box, C3.ai, Databricks, Dell Technologies, Docusign, Google Public Sector, IBM, Meta, Microsoft, Oracle, Palantir, Salesforce, SAP, ServiceNow, Snowflake, Synopsys, Uber, Workday, xAI and Zoom.
