Get your diaries out — the date of the Ethereum merge has been revealed.

The ambitious switch from a proof-of-work blockchain to proof-of-stake will take place on Sept. 15.

This is a few days earlier than previously thought, and follows a successful final dress rehearsal with the Goerli testnet.

The hard work doesn't end here. There's still a danger of some technical hiccups when the transition takes place — and what's more, a small but vocal band of critics are planning to push ahead with a contentious PoW fork.

Ethereum's co-founder Vitalik Buterin has also estimated that the network will be just 55% complete after the merge, so you could argue this is only the beginning.

Previously at the recent Ethereum Community Conference in France, the co-founder shared his vision for future network upgrades after the Merge, which he calls the "surge," "verge," "purge" and "splurge."

He's set out his vision for what Ethereum will look like after the merge during a keynote speech at the Blockchain Futurists Conference in Canada.

We've got a deep dive into what he had to say here.
