Deribit's DVOL, a gauge of the volatility Bitcoin options imply for the next 30 days, read 37.3 on Monday, lower than on nearly nine in 10 days since 2024.
Options expiring Oct. 30, two days after the Federal Reserve's rate decision, priced about 34% volatility and held 38% of Deribit's Bitcoin options open interest.
QCP says a sustained break outside $80,000 to $88,000 could reprice both Bitcoin and its volatility, with Bitcoin trading near $82,000 on Monday.
Bitcoin (
BTC)
options are pricing one of the calmest stretches since early 2024, even after hot inflation data and a stock selloff last week, Deribit data show. The Federal Reserve sets interest rates on Oct. 28, two days before contracts worth about $12 billion expire.
Deribit's DVOL index, which tracks the
volatility options imply for the next 30 days, stood at 37.3 on Monday. QCP says dealers' hedging may be holding Bitcoin in a range, but only until the options roll.
“A sustained break outside $80-88k could trigger sharper repricing in spot and vol,” QCP analysts
wrote.
DVOL sat lower on Monday than on nearly nine in 10 days since the start of 2024, Deribit
data show. Its September low was the lowest close in that span.
Last week tested that calm. Consumer prices
rose faster than forecast on Wednesday, and a second hot
inflation report followed a day later. DVOL closed within a point of where it started on both days.
On Friday, Wall Street's VIX posted its biggest one-day rise since June 5, CoinDesk
reported. DVOL fell that day.
Traders are also paying little extra for the Fed meeting. Options expiring Oct. 30 priced about 34% annualized volatility on Monday, against 32% for contracts expiring this Friday.
QCP pointed to dealers who are long gamma, meaning they hold more options than they have sold. They hedge by selling into rallies and buying into dips, which tends to narrow swings.
Dealers' gamma exposure has gathered around $90,000, with put positions at $80,000 also building, Greeks.live
wrote on Thursday. Option buyers remain cautious and “unwilling to pay a premium to take on risk,” the analytics firm said.
Leverage has thinned in Bitcoin itself. Much of the speculative excess has
moved into
altcoins, said Luca Invernizzi, a senior derivatives trader at Laser Digital, Nomura's crypto unit, in comments to CoinDesk.
Traders
scaled back bets on an October rate increase last week. Bitwise's head of research, Ryan Rasmussen, still expects volatility around the decision and November's midterm elections, CoinDesk
reported.
Two days after the Fed, more than a third of all open Bitcoin options on Deribit expire. Calls, which pay off if prices rise, make up most of them.
The largest positions are calls at $90,000 and above, well over Monday's price.
QCP described Bitcoin as confined to a narrow range, with strong support at $80,000.
Options usually charge for more movement than they get. They have priced more volatility than Bitcoin then delivered on 73.6% of days since April 2022, The Daily Digits, a CryptoQuant contributor,
found. Bitcoin's actual swings over the past month ran below DVOL, by CoinMarketCap prices.
If actual volatility climbs above DVOL before the month-end expiry, option sellers were underpaid, the analyst wrote.
With implied volatility near its lows, Invernizzi sees upside calls as an attractive way to position for a rally. Until Bitcoin leaves QCP's range, options are pricing the calm to hold.
“A clean break above $90K for BTC could trigger another round of short covering,” Invernizzi said.
