Pagoda, a core development team of NEAR Protocol, has released an <a href="https://alpha.near.org/#/adminalpha.near/widget/PostPage?accountId&#61;pagodaplatform.near&amp;blockHeight&#61;88979940" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">update</a> on its Q1 Protocol roadmap. The original <a href="https://www.pagoda.co/blog/protocol-roadmap-2023-4-the-next-2-years-of-near" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">2023–4 Protocol roadmap</a> was published at the end of last year, and it saw a fresh wave of excitement spread among the NEAR community. In response, <a href="https://twitter.com/PagodaPlatform?s&#61;20" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Pagoda</a> has committed to publishing updates at the end of each quarter to keep the community informed.The following blog provides an overview of the progress made in Q1, as well as changes to the future Protocol roadmap.<h3 id="strong-q1-2023-progress-strong">Q1 2023 — Progress</h3>Pagoda reports that it made significant progress on the protocol roadmap in Q1. Specifically, meta transactions and zero balance accounts are now fully implemented and included in the latest Nearcore release. These features improve the usability of NEAR for users from other blockchain networks, especially Ethereum, and lower the barrier to entry for new users and developers.Additionally, the team has found a better way to do Fast Auth that can be applied more ubiquitously than secp256r1 keys, which are limited to iPhones. As a result, the team decided not to implement the originally planned feature. Pagoda has also begun initial work on designing account extensions, which will allow an account to deploy multiple different contracts.<img src="https://miro.medium.com/v2/resize:fit:1400/0*p_m9niMwYw8sOlnZ" />For the core section of the roadmap, most of the implementation work on cold storage and flat storage is already done. These features reduce the cost of running an archival node and improve storage read performance, respectively. Tier 1 network is also in the process of rolling out to mainnet. On testnet, this network has already shown a 3x reduction in latency of messages between validators.<img src="https://miro.medium.com/v2/resize:fit:1400/0*FrYVGL1wSX_028yR" /><h3 id="strong-adjustments-to-the-2023-2024-protocol-roadmap-strong">Adjustments to the 2023–2024 Protocol Roadmap</h3>Pagoda has made slight adjustments to the <a href="https://www.pagoda.co/blog/protocol-roadmap-2023-4-the-next-2-years-of-near" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">original roadmap</a> based on its progress and priorities:<ul><li>Experience Section: Account extension is going to be on the roadmap for Q2 of this year, rather than Q1 next year; this shift was made to support the <a href="https://medium.com/nearprotocol/introducing-the-blockchain-operating-system-bos-8004345d02ba" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">bOS</a> product roadmap, but the team is also confident that it will enhance the protocol overall</li><li>Core Section: Phase 2 of sharding will be pushed out to next year, as opposed to Q4 of this year as originally planned; This delay is not expected to cause any capacity problems on mainnet in the foreseeable future, as usage is still comfortably supported by the four shards currently available</li></ul>To stay completely up-to-date with the protocol changes and participate in governance, NEAR community members are encouraged to join the <a href="https://t.me/NEAR_Protocol_Community_Group" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">protocol community group</a> and follow the <a href="https://github.com/orgs/near/projects/51/views/3" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">NEAR Enhancement Proposal (NEP) process</a>.About NEAR ProtocolNEAR is on a mission to onboard a billion users to the infinite possibilities of Web3 with the Blockchain Operating System (bOS).
