John Deaton, the lawyer running as a Republican for a United States Senate seat in Massachusetts, said 82% of his net worth is in Bitcoin.
At the Bitcoin 2024 conference in Nashville on July 27, Deaton addressed his campaign against incumbent Senator Elizabeth Warren to a crowd of crypto enthusiasts. After disclosing his Bitcoin (<a href="https://cointelegraph.com/bitcoin-price" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">BTC</a>) holdings, the attorney referenced a 2022 <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/meet-the-press/video/sen-warren-when-you-buy-crypto-are-you-buying-air-136619589809" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">interview</a>&nbsp;with the Massachusetts senator, who suggested support for a central bank digital currency, or CBDC.
“I just disclosed to the Federal Election Commission that my net worth, 82%’s in Bitcoin, baby,” said Deaton.

Cointelegraph was unable to locate the FEC filing at the time of publication. Deaton, running to unseat Senator Warren, has filed <a href="https://cointelegraph.com/news/john-deaton-brief-coinbase-sec-appeal" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">several amicus briefs</a> in support of crypto firms fighting lawsuits from the US Securities and Exchange Commission. As of May 30, a YouGov poll <a href="https://polsci.umass.edu/healey-approval-2024-election-toplines-crosstabs-june-5-2024" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">suggested</a> that Senator Warren had a more than 20-point lead over Deaton.
<h2 id="divided-support">Divided support</h2>
Cynthia Lummis, a Wyoming senator who <a href="https://cointelegraph.com/news/no-btc-strategic-reserve-announcement-from-sen-lummis-bitcoin-2024" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">spoke at the conference</a> on July 26, has <a href="https://cointelegraph.com/news/cynthia-lummis-senate-endorsement-ian-cain" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">endorsed Republican Ian Cain</a> over Deaton for the US Senate. Cain, Deaton, and engineer Robert Antonellis will likely face off in the Massachusetts Republican primary on Sept. 3, with the winner going up against Senator Warren on Nov. 5.

Deaton still has the support of many high-profile figures in the crypto space. In July, Ripple <a href="https://cointelegraph.com/news/ripple-donates-1-million-john-deaton-massachusetts-senate-primary" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">donated $1 million</a> to the Commonwealth Unity Fund political action committee to support the lawyer’s campaign against Senator Warren.
The Bitcoin 2024 conference has featured many US lawmakers and prospective candidates claiming to hold pro-crypto views, as the country is roughly 100 days until its general election. Republican nominee Donald Trump is <a href="https://cointelegraph.com/news/samson-mow-six-bitcoin-ideas-trump-nashville" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">expected to speak</a> at the event on July 27.
