Scammers frequently use imitations of popular American brands to trick unsuspecting victims. One such brand is the cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase. The results of the Mailsuite analysis confirm this.
Researchers found 416 instances of phishing and scams involving the Coinbase brand between 2020 and 2024. With a daily trading volume of over $1.8 billion, Coinbase is the world’s second-largest centralized cryptocurrency exchange, according to CoinMarketCap.
Along with Binance, Bybit, and OKEx, the platform has the highest “trust” score in the CoinGecko rating. A total of 1.14 million incidents involving over 249,000 instances of scammers impersonating a famous company or organization were examined by Mailsuite analysts. Scammers in the United States targeted Facebook and Meta more than any other traditional company, with 10,457 reports of fraud. With 9,762 incidents involving the IRS, Apple came in at 9,110, Amazon at 8,919. Steam came in at 4,833, and Microsoft at 4,518.
Japanese companies are targeted by attackers on a global scale. With 18,964 cases, mobile operator au and railway company JR East were at the top. Phishers launched a massive assault on the TON ecosystem, according to earlier reports from SlowMist experts. Their research indicates that Telegram groups are a common vector for the distribution of harmful links and bots, often masquerading as airdrop announcements.
The Ethereum Foundation recently issued a warning about a security breach at SendPulse, an email newsletter service, which led to the distribution of phishing emails to its users.
